| GREEN: Former Busch Champion Scores Top 5 Finish
07-16-2007 | TruckSeries.com Report
Kentucky's State Motto - "United we stand, divided we fall" - could be used by Red Horse Racing as a slogan for the second half of their 2007 season and that motto was put to use by the 1994 NASCAR Busch Series Champion, David Green and his new team on Saturday as they entered the 1.5-mile tri-oval of Kentucky Speedway for The Built Ford Tough 225 Presented by The Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers. After over a ten year absence from the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Green returned to the Series and put Kentucky's State motto to use by rallying together with the Red Horse Racing team, running a clean race, and capturing a top-five in his first race behind the wheel of the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra. "Tonight was a lot of fun," said Green after he climbed from his RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota following the 150-lap race. ""I might have steered the guys the wrong way on the adjustments in practice yesterday. We spent the entire two hours just trying to get me acclimated to the truck. It's been since 1997 since I've been in one of these, and they are quite different from the Busch cars. It was great to get back racing with guys like Mike Skinner and Ron Hornaday and all these guys again, and I think this gives this team a lot of momentum heading into the second half of the season." That momentum comes after Green made virtually a seamless transition back into the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Green qualified the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota in 13th position with a lap of 31.680 seconds at a speed of 170.455 miles per hour for Saturday night's race and wasted no time working his way into the top-ten after the race got underway. "It's a little loose, but not bad," said Green to Crew Chief Jamie "JJ" Jones on lap nine just before he moved into the top-ten. "I'm thinking that it's going to get better as the track temperatures cool." Green's machine was "loose in and free off" when the event's second caution fell for a two-truck wreck in turn two and "JJ" called Green to pit road. The pit crew made fast work of a four-tire pit stop with an air pressure adjustment and fuel, returning Green to the track in second position. "Great stop, guys," Green said to the crew who picked up six valuable spots on pit road. When the green flag waved for the restart on lap 59, Green slid to third. "I'm just knocking the rust off my winning skills," he said. "I haven't been in a position to do that in awhile." Green proved that he hasn't lost his touch by remaining in the top-three until lap 74 when his Toyota became "loose on entry" and he slid into the fifth position. "It's a little better, but it was real loose on that last restart." "JJ" called Green to pit road for a final round of adjustments on lap 97 after the caution was displayed for a single truck wreck in turn one. The Red Horse Racing pit crew pulled off another fast stop, which helped them win the Checkers/Rally's Double Drive Through Award for spending the least amount of time on pit road during the race, but three trucks pulled off pit road in front of Green who were on a different strategy and Green was shown in sixth position on the restart on lap 101. When the race resumed, Green battled door-to-door with his competition in a fierce battle that concluded with Green taking the checkered flag in fifth position. Green's fifth place run was his career best NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series finish and his best career finish at Kentucky Speedway in seven prior starts there in a NASCAR Busch Series ride. "The races I won in the Busch Series and races that were very mentally stressful don't even hold a candle to what it takes to run these things," said Green after the race. "We ran 16 laps tonight before the first caution and the crew told me it was 16 laps down, and I felt like I ran 200 laps. I've never been in a race with that fast of a pace and I'm sure the racetrack added to that. I take responsibility a little bit for getting us in the wrong direction because yesterday I had no idea what this thing is supposed to feel like. What a great effort. It's good to be back in the top-five and run competitively. I have to thank our sponsor, RFMS, Toyota, and everyone involved with this team. All in all, it was a good night." Green and the Red Horse Racing team will take a well-deserved week off before returning the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra to the race track at the .686-mile oval of O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis for the Power Stroke Diesel 200 presented by Ford and International, under the lights, on Friday, July 27th, 2007.
