FORD NOTES: Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway

07-15-2007 | TruckSeries.com Report

Rick Crawford - No. 14 Power Stroke Diesel by International Ford F-150 - (involved in accident on lap 11 - finished 30th, qualified 16th)
"It was my mistake, drove it in under the 22 truck (Ryan Matthews) trying to advance my position. And it's slick down at the bottom and we should have seen that in qualifying. It was slick and slid out from under me and did a lot of damage early in the race to the Ford Power Stroke Diesel by International. I hate that this happened to these guys."

You think you can get the truck back out? "Yes, we're Built Ford Tough here tonight at the Built Ford Tough 225. The guys will do the best job they can, well be back."

Peter Shepherd - No. 50 Northern Tool + Equipment Ford F-150 - (involved in accident with No. 59 -Terry Cook, Toyota on lap 49 - finished 32nd, qualified 12th)
"It was just a chain reaction. I hate it for the guys and the Northern Tool + Equipment. We thought we had a good truck; we unloaded and came of the truck and practiced here pretty good. In race trim, we couldn't get a handle on it. Unfortunately, the 59 (Terry Cook), was coming up on, I think it was the 91, and kind of crammed down a little bit. It was no body's fault and but it got the 59 a real loose and he had to check-up and when he checked-up we were right there and just happened to get in the back of him. It's a bad break for us and them and everybody involved. I hate it for everybody"

Erik Darnell - No. 99 Northern Tool + Equipment Ford F-150 - (involved in accident on lap 94 - finished 29th, qualified 6th)
"Our Northern Tool + Equipment Ford F-150 was really good and we were looking for a strong run here at the Built Ford Tough 225. John Quinn (crew chief) and all the guys did a great job getting the truck adjusted to where it needed to be. We were able to drive up through the field there and got up to third. I had just gotten to third and was going through turns three and four when the truck wiggled real bad. I radioed the crew chief and told him that I thought I had a tire going down. By the time I made it into turn one, the left rear tire blew out and I hit the wall. It's unfortunate."

Jon Wood - No. 21 Bubba Burgers Ford F-150 - (finished 6th, qualified 30th)
"It was a decent night. Everybody did what they were supposed to do. I think we started the race a little too loose, but it's just me not knowing a lot of truck racing, I guess. We overcame a lot. John Monson (crew chief) made a lot of great calls on the pit box. We had good pit stops, so it was a pretty decent night."

David Starr - No. 10 International MaxxForce Diesel Ford F-150 - (finished 12th, qualified 18th)
"I thought we were better than that. Our International MaxxForce Diesel Ford F-150 wasn't bad. It wasn't what we wanted. I thought in practice and everything we'd be in the top-10 close to the top-5. We kept working on the truck on pit stops. We were getting behind coming off pit road; and it was hard to recover the track position and lost a couple of spots and almost spun in the middle of one and two and lost a couple of spots, then gained a couple back. That kind of killed our momentum. It wasn't a bad day for Circle Bar Racing. We're getting there; we're getting better. This finish is not what we wanted. We wanted to be in the top-10 or top-5. The truck is in one piece, so we'll go to the next race and keep digging."

Jack Smith - No. 63 Dave Porter Truck Sales Ford F-150 - (finished 27th, qualified 33rd)
"We had a broken fuel pump, so we just kept compensating. We don't have the technology to build trucks like the other teams. We have to do things the old-fashioned way. We got close there. We weren't getting down on the nose fast enough like everybody else. I watched Mike Skinner and those guys and they're down in the corners way before we are. I drive off in the corner and plow the nose. The more we freed it up in the back; we didn't need to be working in the back. We had the fuel pump go bad. We were running having fun in the draft and we were the next one on the Lucky Dog and Mike (Mittler) said, 'Don't go back up there.' He wanted to come home with a truck that wasn't banged up. I wanted to get back up there and mix in with the other drivers. It's a shame, because I know I can run with those guys. I'll be there one day, you'll see."

Joey Clanton, driver of the No. 09 Zaxby's Ford F-150 was the top finishing rookie in tonight's Built Ford Tough 225 presented by the Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers.

Talk about your run and track position being very critical here
. "Well, track position was real critical; especially early on with the cautions came back to back. They put a lot of 'quick dry' down and I think it was me and Ryan Matthews got almost to the top of the wall and almost became another accident and trying to avoid it and got hit the left door and it knocked the track bar. So, on low pressure it kept dragging on the ground and we just couldn't get going there. We lost several spots, several key spots on every restart. Then you get your rhythm going again and couldn't get track position. Trying to make-up that time was kind of difficult. The cars that seemed to lead lap were pretty much all leaving.

Still with all those challenges tonight, you came in the top-10. So, that's got to feel pretty good? "It almost matches my best for the year. I'm just happy to keep the momentum going with our team. Zaxby's and Ford and everybody that's here, it's just big for our team. We had a disappointing race back in Memphis two weeks ago and to come back and rally like this, it's good. We need to get inside that top-10 and be near the podium at the end of the year."

Travis Kvapil, driver of the No. 6 K & N Filters Ford F-150, was the top-finishing Ford in the Built Ford Tough 225 Presented by The Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers. Kvapil finished in second place and remains fourth in the points standings.

You held up the Ford brand tonight at the Built Ford Tough 225 presented by the Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers, it's your fourth top-5, seventh top-10 of the season, second straight top-5, you pulled off the win in memphis. You had a lot of momentum coming into this race coming out tonight with a second place.
"I'm really happy with our K & N Ford tonight. We just really wanted to get the victory for all the local Ford dealers and Ford people that were here this weekend. We really happy with a second place finish and the momentum our team has had over the last five or six races. We've really been running strong, got a couple of wins. I'm happy because I didn't feel like our truck was really all that good tonight. I know the potential of where we should be and we just never really hit on it. At the same time, I'm really happy with second. But disappointed in the overall points battle and that the guy we're chasing led the most laps and kicked our tail. I'm disappointed in that, that's the big picture. But it's a good solid top-5. We really hit on a couple of things late in practice yesterday that really got some speed in our truck. We basically didn't have enough time to tune that package and we really hit on it a little late. We started off strong and we tried to make some adjustments during the race. We slowed the truck down; we lost a couple of spots in that second run. Made the adjustments back and we were able to pick them back off in the last run and settle in for second."

How tough is it to race a guy, when you see a truck that good, as good as the No. 5 was tonight? What mentality, do you switch into points mentality at some point in the race and say we're just not going to get there, let's go for what we can? "Yes, I knew my only shot would have been on that restart because I saw how strong Mike (Skinner) was on the runs and he could kind of pull away from everybody. And the 77 (Brendan Gaughan), the 30 (Todd Bodine), they were on two tires, I think, or no tires. And the 22 (Ryan Matthews) was up there. And me and Mike (Skinner) were on four, for sure. I able to get under the 5 (Skinner), getting into turn one. I was hoping I could clear it, because that was probably going to my only shot at getting in front of him all night long. I just couldn't quite pull it off."

"Luckily, the 30 (Todd Bodine) and 77 got racing pretty hard and got out of the groove a little bit and I was able to clear those guys. Just trying to head down and run consistent laps because I knew Ted (Musgrave) was strong earlier in the race and I seen him way back there in my mirror and I knew he'd be coming. The crew chief (Mike Beam) was reading me off lap times of what I was doing, and Mike was doing, and Ted was doing. I was trying to be smooth and consistent and protect second place after I realized there was no way that I could catch the 5 (Skinner)."

Can you talk about the track conditions in turns three and four? "There was that wreck with the 50 (Peter Shepherd) and the 59 (Terry Cook) coming into the pits, I think they just dropped a bunch of oil down getting to pit road, right in the groove basically, right on the race track. They put oil dry down and blew it off. It's like we needed a couple of laps to work that oil dry in before we actually just blew it off. It was pretty slick down there but I paid attention to it and tried to avoid it. The 5 (Skinner) was in front of me trying to do the same thing. It just took a few laps to work it in, to run it in. Towards the end of the night it wasn't an issue. It was just a little slippery for a little bit and bit a couple guys."
