BUSCH: Keselowski Top Busch Rookie at Chicagoland

07-14-2007 | TruckSeries.com Report

Brad Keselowski in the No. 88 U.S. Navy Chevrolet was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race today at Chicagoland. Keselowski finished 14th and took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the first time this season. This is Keselowski's best finish in 21 NASCAR Busch Series races. His previous best effort was 24th earlier this season at Dover (race No. 14).

Keselowski is the FOURTH different driver to claim Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors in the last FOUR races. This was Keselowski's first start for JR Motorsports and car owner Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Brad Keselowski - No. 88 U.S. Navy Chevrolet: You came from a lap down to finish inside the top-15 on the lead lap. "Yeah that's exactly what we were looking to do. Had some struggles, worked on it, got a little better and kept it going straight the whole day and hat's what we needed to do for JR Motorsports and the NAVY."

Was your car tight or loose? "We've been playing around with some right-front coil bind and it would land on that real hard and bounce and get me loose. Eventually as the pressures built up and all that stuff it went away and we just got really tight. Still a great run and we're really happy and come back and do it again, hopefully."

You were able to find a groove and pass a lot of cars today. "I think that's a lot of truck experience. You race the trucks you race air and that's a lot of this on a mile-and-a-half finding that good air and getting there and using it hard."

This must be a boost for your confidence. "Yeah, definitely. I feel like I belong and I feel like I can get the job done and when you qualify bad it kind of hurts that confidence sometimes but to come back in the race is real good."

This is your best finish in the nascar busch series. This is a big day for you. "Yeah it is, a big day for everyone. Bring it home in one piece and everybody is happy."

Wes Ward, Crew Chief, No. 88 U.S. Navy Chevrolet: "I think for the first time with the team and trying to figure out his terminology and what he needed and where we're at. We put him the hole by starting 33rd and he drove back to 14th. He got a lap down and got the lap back so all in all I'm really pleased with him. The whole NAVY team did an awesome job."

Keselowski seemed to get better and better as the race went on. "The car was a little off at first and we made a lot of adjustment and him where he needed to be and then he took off after that. There at the end we had times good enough to run in the top-10. Fourteenth with 23 Cup drivers out here is not bad so we're extremely happy right now."

Are performances like today what you realistically want to accomplish? "Yeah and that's what we've been wanting all along, just some consistency, and that's what he brought us today. Dale Jr. had a decent car last week. It wasn't the best in the world and he brought it home 14th. Starting to be a little consistency in the team and that's what we're looking for."

Keselowski Press Conference
You've had a big week. Comment on your run out there today.
"I was just telling Matt it's never a bad deal when you're sitting here at this podium. To be the Raybestos Rookie of the Race is pretty cool and the first race with the NAVY and factory Chevrolet I'm pretty proud of that. I'm glad for the team. They needed this strong run as they've come off some tough weeks. I wish the race was about 50 laps longer because we were really good on long runs and not too much on short runs. All in all a good day for the NAVY car."

How much did the lucky dog you today? "Oh quite a bit. I think the bottom line is that we just need to be better on the short runs. I'm really appreciative to NASCAR for that. It really fixed our day for us."

Comment on your emotions today. Did you feel pressure? Were you nervous? "There's certainly pressure when you're in Dale Jr.'s Busch car. It's kind of a tough way to go but in qualifying, we didn't qualify well at all. You start to loose confidence when stuff like that happens so to run as well as we did today in the race gets that confidence back. That's a big deal for me and certainly for the team as well."

What were you expectations coming into this race? "You know, this is exactly what I was hoping for. Being realistic, first time together, new group with Wes Ward and Tony Eury Sr. it's a great group of guys and we're starting to build that communication. Every lap we get and every time we talk we just keep building communication and that's why we got better at the end of the race."
