It's a well-known fact in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series garage that Jamie "JJ" Jones, Crew Chief of the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra is a short-track expert. And teamed up with Raybestos Rookie of the Year leader Aaron Fike, it's no surprise that the Red Horse Racing team rocked their way into their first top-five finish of the year at the Birthplace of Rock 'n Roll on Saturday night, under the lights, at Memphis Motorsports Park.
While driving for the team with one of the best short-track programs around, Fike laid down an impressive lap of 22.997 seconds at a speed of 117.407 miles per hour in qualifying which was good for eighth position on the starting grid.
When the race got underway, Fike battled door-to-door with former Craftsman Truck Series Champion Travis Kvapil before moving his way into seventh position when the first caution flag was displayed for an accident in turn two. "The truck is pretty good right now," said Fike as he motored around under caution.
When the race returned to green flag competition on lap 19, Fike slid to ninth. Quiet on the radio for the next 53 laps during a long green flag run, Fike waited until the next caution on lap 72 to tell the crew that his Toyota was "not bad, just a little free under throttle" when the caution was displayed for debris. "JJ" called Fike in for four tires and fuel on lap 74. The RFMS/Red Horse Racing crew rocked the pit stop, returning Fike to the track in sixth position.
When the race went back to green, Fike got held up by a lap truck and slid to seventh. When the next caution was displayed for a wreck on the backstretch, "JJ" called Fike to pit road for his final pit stop of the night. "I need a little bit of help off the corner," said Fike before bringing the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra down pit road. "It feels really loose off. I need some side bite." Fike hit pit road on lap 117 for four tires, fuel, and an air pressure adjustment, returning to the track in sixth position.
When the race resumed, Fike continued to race in sixth spot while Spotter Kevin Ray keyed the radio to tell Fike, "Keep doing what you're doing. You're doing a good job. Keep hitting your marks." Fike hit all his marks and snuck up on the rear bumper of former Champion Mike Skinner by lap 162. As the leaders began to hit lap traffic, Fike showed great patience by methodically working his way by the slower trucks. Fike benefited from the final caution which came out on lap 191 after Travis Kvapil wrecked the leader in turn four. Fike raced in the top-five during the event's final five-lap shootout to score a career-best fifth place finish in only his 12th NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start of the year.
"The truck was good. We were loose the whole race, but this is our first top-five of the season. I'm real proud of the guys. We struggled the last couple of races, so it's nice to come in here and get a top-five. I've been pretty confident all year. We probably should've had a couple top-fives already this year, but we caught a couple bad breaks. This means a lot. We've been in the top-10 in points all year, so it's nice to get a good finish and keep the truck up there in points."
By virtue of his fifth-place finish, Fike moved to 8th in the 2007 Championship Point Standings and extended his lead in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings.
Fike and the Red Horse Racing team will take a well-earned week off before returning the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra to racing action at the 1.5-mile tri-oval of Kentucky Speedway for the Built Ford Tough 225 presented by the Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers, under the lights, on Saturday, July 14th, 2007. Live television coverage will be provided by SPEED at 7:30 p.m. ET with radio coverage coming to you live from MRN Radio.
