STARR: Connor and Crew Wrench Their Way to Top-10 at Milwaukee
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

A couple of solid runs had David Starr and his International MaxxForce Diesel team believing they had turned the corner and were making gains on improving their 2007 season. The teams chemistry and working knowledge of the new Ford F-150 body has been improving with every race. Crew chief Dennis Connor and the International MaxxForce Diesel team completed Circle Bars newest chassis CB-24 just in time for the Magic Mile.

Off the trailer CB-24 showed promise but was a little sluggish. Connor and crew tweaked on their latest Ford F-150 and the truck responded with room for improvement. A solid qualifying effort put the International MaxxForce Diesel team 15th quickest and ready for the drop of the green flag.

With the completion of the pre-race ceremonies, Starr strapped himself into his International MaxxForce Diesel Ford F-150 and was ready for action.

With the drop of the green flag Starr was on a roll and picked up 4 spots in the first 2 laps. As the race wore on Starr's F-150 would get tight in the corners and the Texas native was having to wait to pick up the throttle in order to make his truck turn. By the time Starr could bring his International MaxxForce Diesel Ford F-150 to the attention of Dennis Connor and crew Starr had backed up 3 spots to 14th.

The over the wall gang performed masterfully with 4 Goodyears, Sunoco fuel and a track bar adjustment. All went well until they dropped the jack and it got hung up under the truck. Starr would drag the jack out of his pit box causing a stop and go penalty. Starr was able to complete the penalty and remain on the lead lap, but he was now the last truck on the lead lap in 20th position.

Back under green Starr's F-150 was now starting to run hot. With the next caution Starr would bring his International MaxxForce Diesel machine to pit road so the team could remove some of the tape off the grill and clean out the rubber build up on the radiator screen.

Back under green the International MaxxForce Diesel Ford F-150 was cooling down while David Starr was heating up. Picking up a spot every other lap, Starr was up to 13th when the race took on a long green flag run. With the field spread out, Starr was only able to pick up two more spots during the long green section of the race. During the long run, Starr's International MaxxForce Diesel F-150 was getting tighter with each lap.

A late caution would allow Starr to bring his International MaxxForce Diesel Ford to the attention of Connor and crew. Four fresh Goodyears, Sunoco fuel, along with a trac bar adjustment plus half a spring rubber in the right rear and Starr would return to the Magic Mile in the 11th position. Under green Starr was trapped in heavy traffic making it tough to climb the ladder into the top 10.

With less than 10 laps to go, Starr would break the top 10 and hang on to the 10th spot to record the International MaxxForce Diesel team's second top 10 of the season.

Dennis Connor; "We salvaged a top 10 but we made too many mistakes getting there. We're getting better every race but it's a tough process."

David Starr; "Our International MaxxForce Diesel Ford F-150 was pretty good tonight. We just got tight in the center of the corners. I thought we had a pretty good race piece until the race started. The truck just seemed to get tighter and tighter as the race went on in the center of the corner. Dennis Connor and the guys kept freeing it up and it kept getting tighter and tighter. It wasn't a bad night for Circle Bar Racing and the Ford F-150. The team is really working hard and we keep learning, making changes and growing."
