FIKE: Fights for Finish in Milwaukee
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

The Official State Motto of Wisconsin is "Forward", adopted in 1851 to reflect Wisconsin's continuous drive, and Aaron Fike and the Red Horse Racing team were hoping to make the most of the State Motto on Friday night as the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series entered the "America's Dairyland" for the Toyota Tundra Milwaukee 200 at The Milwaukee Mile.

In Fike's first appearance at The Milwaukee Mile in a Toyota Tundra, he and the Red Horse Racing team showed great drive and determination after laying down a lap in qualifying that was nearly a half-second faster than their final practice speeds. With a lap of 29.965 seconds at a speed of 120.140 miles per hour, Fike qualified the No.1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra in 17th position for the Toyota Tundra Milwaukee 200.

With The Milwaukee Mile being virtually flat, handling is of great importance. After lining up inside of row nine, Fike battled side-by-side before working his way into 14th when the first caution flag waved on lap three for a two-truck wreck in turn four. When the race returned to green, Spotter Kevin Ray told Fike, "you've got a real good drive off of turn two". Even though Fike had a good drive off the corner, he slid to 19th before the event's second caution was displayed on lap 68 for debris. "It's a little tight," said Fike. "It's almost hopping the right rear in the corner."

Fike brought the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota to pit road where Crew Chief Jamie Jones called for a four tire stop with fuel and air pressure and chassis adjustments. The crew ripped off one of their fast signature pit stops, returning Fike to the track in 12th position.

When the race went green on lap 72, Fike slid to 14th while avoiding the next two back-to-back caution flags. Following the two cautions, a long green flag run followed and Fike slid to 18th while working his way through lap traffic. Held up by the slower trucks, Fike fell one lap down to the leader on lap 126. During the long green flag run, Fike had to pit for four tires, fuel, and an air pressure adjustment on lap 144. In a rare incident on pit road, a lug nut issue on the right front cost Fike two laps on pit road. Fike returned to the track in 24th position.

The green flag run was interrupted on lap 159 as the No. 13 wrecked in turn four. Fike was 22nd on the restart on lap 165 and avoided the event's final caution to finish 21st in his Truck Series debut at the one-mile flat track.

"Our No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra could have been a little better tonight," said Fike. "Handling is really important at a track like this and we fought handling issues tonight. I think we learned a lot though and I know that I learned a lot about the track and what it takes to race here. We'll just put this race behind us and move onto Memphis next week."

Fike slid one spot in the 2007 Championship Point Standings to 9th but he keeps a strong hold on his significant lead in the 2007 Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings.

Fike and the Red Horse Racing team will take the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra to Memphis Motorsports Park for the running of the O'Reilly 200, under the lights, on Saturday, June 30th, 2007.
