The black flag meant Ted Musgrave couldn't finish Friday night's Milwaukee 200 at The Milwaukee Mile at the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds. But that was of little solace to Kelly Bires and his No. 21 Bush's Baked Beans Ford race team.
Musgrave turned his truck into the side of Bires on the 75th during the main event, sending Bires Wood Brothers/JTG Racing-prepared Ford into the wall. NASCAR ordered Musgrave off the track for reckless driving, but the damage was done with Bires finishing 35th.
After starting 28th, Bires was slowly working through the field when Musgrave took out his frustration on the Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate.
Bires grew up 142 miles away in Mauston, Wis. His only other start at the famed racetrack was a victory in 2006 in the American Speed Association Late Model Series.
Bires was doing double duty for Wood Brothers/JTG Racing. He also was scheduled to drive in relief for Jon Wood in Saturday night's Busch Series race.
The No. 21 Bush's Baked Beans Ford will return to the Craftsman Truck Series next Saturday night for the O'Reilly 200 at the Memphis Motorsports Park.
Kelly Bires, driver of the No. 21 U.S. Bush's Baked Beans Ford F-150:
"I really don't know what happened. Someone told me 'inside' and 'outside.' Next thing I knew I had someone in my right or left rear, I'm not sure, and just ran over me, basically. I'm just trying to stay out of the way yet remain competitive and get the lap back. I don't think there was any need for that. I guess he's a poor loser or something, I don't know. That's not the way I race.
"I had only been here one time. It was last year and I raced in ASA and ended up winning it. We brought a brand new truck today, never tested so we were working out the bugs. We got it better. I don't know if we have a winning truck, but a Top-10 truck. We were going to see how the adjustments were going to go and see what we had. I don't know why (Musgrave) drove right into the driver's-side door. We were going to be all right. NASCAR apparently agreed it was uncalled for, but that doesn't do us much good when we're in the garage with a crashed truck."
