Ted Musgrave, driver of the No. 9 Team ASE/Germain Toyota Tundra in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, is coming off a great finish at one of his favorite race tracks, Michigan International Speedway, and heading into a weekend that ranks above all others - racing action packed with family and friends at The Milwaukee Mile. Musgrave races Friday night, in the Toyota Tundra Milwaukee 200 at a track where he is the only Truck Series driver with multiple wins (2001, 2004). To say Musgrave is excited for this week's race would be a gross understatement.
"Milwaukee really puts the emphasis on working hard because that's back home, in front of friends and family, and people that followed your career. They live in that area and they've come out to see you race, so they really expect you to do well. You put a little extra effort into it, I know the crew does, too. No matter where I was or what I was driving, the people around me have always given an extra 110-percent instead of 100-percent because they know it's a track where I'll do my best to win," said Musgrave of racing at a track that's such an important piece of home and history.
From his father and his family to some of the most famous names in racing, Musgrave is awestruck whenever he arrives at The Milwaukee Mile as he remembers the racers who've taken to the same one-mile track before him.
"Milwaukee has a lot of history. My brother raced there, and most of all, my father raced there in the early 60s in USAC. A lot of big name racers have raced at that track - it's very historic. When you go to that race track, it's like some people when they go to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. When I go to Milwaukee and think of all the guys that have raced there - Parnelli Jones, Norm Nelson, AJ Foyt and on down the line - everybody that's been in racing has raced at Milwaukee and at least I can say that I've race there and won there multiple times" beams Musgrave with unmistakable pride.
Musgrave has two wins, and five top-five finishes in his six Truck Series career starts at The Milwaukee Mile.
In addition to racing at Milwaukee, Musgrave will dive back into the area's racing community. Raised in nearby Mundelein, Ill., Musgrave lived outside of Milwaukee during the development of his racing career. When the Truck Series racing is completed, Musgrave will head to Schererville, Ind., to take part in the sixth-annual Elmer Musgrave Memorial.
"Saturday is special for me. It's something I do every year, and there was some worry that this year would be the last one, but I hear everything's worked out so the race track will be having another one next year. But, I will be at the 6th Annual Elmer Musgrave Memorial race, on Saturday, at Illiana Speedway (Schererville, Ind.). I'm taking my mother, my sister, and my brothers to Illiana Speedway, and I guess I'll be racing in something there on Saturday night. It's a great time, it's in honor of my father, and it's something I hope I never miss," said Musgrave.
Musgrave sits sixth in the Truck Series points standings, just four points behind fifth and 87 points behind runner-up Ron Hornaday, Jr. Mike Skinner leads Musgrave by 288 points.
