Bell Fights Loose Truck to 20th at Michigan

T.J. Bell came to Michigan International Speedway needing a change of luck. In his previous two outings at Dover and Texas, Bell suffered two hard hits in both the races and the point standings. Hoping to capitalize on Roush Fenway Racing's history of success at Michigan, Bell's optimism was high entering the weekend. Unfortunately, Bell's 20th-place finish was not what he had in mind.

Bell started the race in the 17th position, but began dropping positions in the early going of the event. Bell reported to his Heathcliff's Cat Litter crew that his Ford felt loose from the entry to the center of the turns, and that he was struggling to keep his F-150 under control. Bell soldiered on, but reported that as the laps clicked off, the handling situation got progressively worse. He caught a break when the first caution of the race came at lap 29 for debris. Bell, showing in the 29th position, was able to bring his No. 50 Ford to the attention of the Heathcliff's crew, taking on four tires, fuel and an adjustment on the track bar. Quick work on pit road allowed Bell to get off pit road in the 20th position for the lap 34 restart.

Bell worked his way up to the 18th position by lap 37, but his forward progress seemed to stall out once he got there. Bell reported that his Ford was a little tight off the corners, but felt good getting in. Bell asked his crew for more of the same changes on the next stop to help him keep his forward momentum going. When the caution flag flew again at lap 56 for debris, Bell was able to come to pit road for the changes he desperately needed, taking on four tires, fuel and a wedge adjustment. The Heathcliff's crew again performed flawlessly on pit road, sending Bell back on track in the 13th position at lap 61.

Bell began to backslide on the restart, reporting to his crew that his Ford was very loose on the bottom side of the racetrack. The caution flew again at lap 73 when the No. 18 truck lost an engine. Bell reported to his crew that he had lost the clutch on his F-150, which would cause him problems on the restarts. Bell did what he could to overcome his handling and mechanical problems to bring home a 20th-place finish.

"We fought a really loose truck all day," said Bell. "We're happy to bring our Heathcliff's Cat Litter Ford F-150 home in one piece. We were able to complete all the laps, which was huge for us after the few weeks we've had. I've got to thank everyone at Heathcliff's Cat Litter and Roush Fenway Racing. Things are going to get better for this team, things are going to turn around. We've shown we're capable of running well, and we will get the finishes that we deserve."

The Craftsman Truck Series next races at The Milwaukee Mile on Friday, June 22.
