Travis Kvapil rebounded from a disappointed end at last week's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway to take the pole for today's Michigan 200 at Michigan International Speedway. The 2003 series champion went out early in the session and turned a 40.090 second/179.596 mile per hour lap in the Roush Fenway Racing No. 6 K&N Filters Ford to score his first Bud Pole Award since he qualified first at California Speedway in October 2004.
Kvapil will start alongside the man who drove the No. 6 Ford to a runner-up finish in this race last year, Mark Martin. Martin, now driving the No. 21 Bush's Beans Ford out of the Wood/jtg Racing shop, was over two-tenths of a second slower than Kvapil, running a 40.295 second/178.682 mile per hour lap to give him the outside front row starting position.
Former MIS pole winner Kyle Busch qualified third in the No. 51 Flanders Beef Patties Chevrolet, with a 40.444 second/178.024 mile per hour effort. Busch started from the pole in 2005 on his way to his best career MIS result, second. Mike Skinner qualified fourth - his worst starting position since he rolled off ninth in the season opener at Daytona - turning in a 40.484 second/177.848 mile per hour lap in the No. 5 Toyota Tundra Toyota. Busch's Billy Ballew Motorsports teammate Bill Lester rounded out the top five in qualifying with a 40.500 second/177.778 mile per hour lap in the No. 15 Christian Debt Consolidation Chevrolet.
Last week's winner Todd Bodine qualified sixth, three-time series champ and Michigan native Jack Sprague was seventh, Chad McCumbee - fresh of a top-20 finish in his NASCAR Nextel Cup Series debut last week at Pocono - was eighth, Ted Musgrave was ninth, and defending race winner Johnny Benson rounded out the top ten.
Other notables include Brendan Gaughan, winner of the fastest NCTS race ever here at MIS in 2003, in eleventh, Ron Hornaday in 14th, Terry Cook in 18th, Ken Schrader in 21st, yesterday's ARCA RE/MAX Series winner at MIS Erik Darnell in 25th, Stacy Compton in 26th, and Rick Crawford in 27th. Only Bryan Silas failed to make the starting grid.
The Michigan 200 is slated for a 3 P.M. Eastern start, and can be seen live on SPEED. TruckSeries.com will have continuing event coverage, including real-time race updates throughout the day.
