Racers want to race. And when they're running the in the Top 10, they want to race every week. That's the case for Stacy Compton, driver of the No. 09 Zaxby's Ford F-150 at this Saturday's Michigan 200 at the Michigan International Speedway.
Compton has finished second and 10th in his last two starts in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, and he's eager to extend that success for Wood Brothers/JTG Racing.
Compton shares the driving duties with Joey Clanton in the No. 09 Zaxby's Ford. Compton finished second in the truck two weeks ago at Dover, then he drove in relief of Kelly Bires last Friday in a 10th-place effort at the Texas Motor Speedway. Bires moved over to the Busch Series for Jon Wood, who is recovering from an adverse reaction to prescribed medication.
Despite driving two different team trucks from the Wood Brothers/JTG Racing stables, Compton said it's amazing how fast and comfortable both drive. Each have their own nuances, but they are equally competitive.
Stacy Compton, Driver No. 09 Zaxby's Ford F-150: "This was supposed to be a part-time year for me, but I'm really happy to be driving three weeks in a row," he said. "We've had trucks that have been capable of winning races in each of the last two races, so I can't wait to pick up where we left off.
"It was a good experience to drive the No. 21 truck last week because it gave me a different feel. There were some things about that truck I liked, so I'm sure this Zaxby's team will incorporate them into the No. 09 truck. We don't have far to go. We're at the point where we're putting ourselves in position to win each week. Now it's up to racing luck and right circumstances."
Gary Cogswell, Crew Chief No. 09 Zaxby's Ford F-150: "It's been a lot of fun going to the racetrack every week because we're so competitive. Stacy's been up on the steering wheel and he's getting everything out of the truck," he said. "We've used the fact we have two different drivers to our advantage because we've been able to put together two sets of notes. We can compare those notes and really emphasize the common areas."
