Stacy Compton was in a hurry Friday afternoon to finish the AAA Insurance 200 at the Dover International Speedway. The sooner he finished the race, the sooner he could join his wife as they awaited the birth of their second child.
Compton did all he could do to get done as quickly as possible, driving the No. 09 Zaxby's Ford F-150 to a second-place finish. It's the best finish for Wood Brothers/JTG Racing since the team created its NASCAR Camping World Truck Series program before the 2006 season.
Compton started 19th and had little trouble moving into the Top 10. Once he got there, he used his experience on the one-mile concrete track, good pit strategy and quick work on pit road to continue his progress.
Compton is sharing the driving duties in the No. 09 Zaxby's Ford with Joey Clanton. Together, they have three Top-10 finishes in eight starts. Clanton will drive the truck next Friday night at the Texas Motor Speedway, then Compton will return to the driver's seat for the June 16 race at the Michigan International Speedway.
Stacy Compton, driver of the No. 09 Zaxby's Ford F-150: "I tell you what, I'm so proud of these guys on the Zaxby's Ford," he said. "They work so hard all year long. I'm a part-timer and they gave me a truck that can go out and win races and it's a lot of fun. These guys at Wood Brothers/JTG, they never stop digging and every week that I've been in this truck, we've had awesome race trucks. It's a shame we can't win them all. It's going to be a big weekend; we'll have a baby come Sunday, if hasn't already happened.
"The track was good, I mean this place usually gets tight and I stayed loose the whole day and we didn't get the rubber build up like we normally get, which I think makes for better racing. There were two and three grooves out there; we went three wide a couple times and there was grip out there. A lot of people talked about scuffed tires and they did rubber up and there were a couple of grooves out there. I think we did a good job.
"The Toyotas are tough and it's obvious that they've got a lot of horsepower, but the Fords are strong. You can't take away from those Roush-Yates motors. I think Ford has a great truck right now; obvious Toyota has a good truck. Those guys were a little bit quicker than us today and I think Johnny (Benson) was coming right there at the end, so they're still tough. They're going to be the truck to beat out there every week, but I think we can compete with them."
