It took seven and a half hours to complete Saturday's running of the Ohio 250 at Mansfield Motorsports Park and the K & N Filters team, along with driver Travis Kvapil, showed patience and perseverance throughout the day. Kvapil started up front but found himself in the back of the field after a near miss on track and a pit stop to help an ill-handling truck. After enduring several rain delays, the No. 6 team bounced back to a seventh place finish which also launched Kvapil to seventh in the overall point standings.
Weather proved to be a hurdle throughout the race weekend for the Craftsman Truck Series in Mansfield. Friday's qualifying session was temporarily delayed due to rain but got under way with the No. 5 truck of Mike Skinner taking the pole. Kvapil qualified fifth with a fast lap time of 16.582 seconds and felt confident heading into Saturday's race.
Saturday afternoon saw ominous skies over the .500-oval but the trucks did take the green flag as scheduled. The field scrambled for position and Kvapil settled into sixth before the first caution flew on lap nine when the No. 63 spun in turn four. As the field came around for the green flag on lap 14, the skies opened up and NASCAR threw the caution followed by a red flag on lap 15 for rain, the first of four rain delays on the day.
The race re-started and the No. 6 K & N Filters F-150 came down pit road for the first of two pit stops. Kvapil reported that his truck was loose so crew chief Mike Beam called for a track bar adjustment and fuel. Only half the field pitted with Kvapil which placed the No. 6 truck in 20th for the re-start. The green flag flew on lap 37 and Kvapil tried moving his way through the field but to no avail. The fourth caution of the day flew on lap 50 and after a brief discussion; Kvapil indicated that he couldn't move forward because his truck had no rear grip. The decision was then made to bring the No. 6 F-150 down pit road for a wedge adjustment, four tires and fuel returning the No. 6 K & N Filters truck to the track in 28th for the re-start on lap 56.
Kvapil patiently moved his way forward breaking into the top 20 on lap 99 but only after weathering more rain delays. The race was stopped at lap 106 for the final time due to rain and resumed at 7:20 p.m. EDT with the No. 6 truck in 14th. As the laps clicked off, Kvapil methodically maneuvered to the front. On lap 196, running in 12th, Kvapil reported that his truck was a touch tight in the middle of the corners but overall it was handling good.
Kvapil would endure three more cautions and emerge in seventh place as the checkered flag waved over the start/finish line. Dennis Setzer took home the win followed by Jack Sprague in second.
"Today was a pretty good day for the K & N Filters team," said Kvapil following Saturday's endurance event. "We started the race pretty loose then a few trucks wrecked right around me so all of that put us behind early on. The No. 6 F-150 was just too loose for me to do anything with so we decided to come in for an adjustment. We worked our way up to seventh from the back and had a pretty good truck all day after that last pit stop. I tried to be patient and race a clean race and that got us up front. It's good for this K & N team because we've had a good truck the last four weeks and just haven't had the finish we deserve so this was a good day for us."
Kvapil's teammates finished 13th (T.J. Bell) and 15th (Erik Darnell). Kvapil moves to seventh in the overall Craftsman Series Point Standings and heads to the "Monster Mile" in Dover, Delaware with the No. 6 K & N Filters team next week.
