Mike Skinner and his No. 5 Toyota Tundra team headed to Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in hopes of a top-10 finish. Skinner had never started higher than 14th and never finished higher than 11th at the Ohio track and was looking to score his best finish at the half-mile facility.
Skinner finished near the top of the speed chart after the first practice session on Friday, after the team worked through a number of combinations. During the Happy Hour final practice session, Skinner and crew chief, Jeff Hensley stepped it up a notch and finished Friday with the fastest truck on the property.
After capturing the last four consecutive pole positions, Skinner was on a mission to make it five in a row. Skinner qualified midway through time trials and posted an incredible lap time of 16.382 seconds. The lap enabled Skinner to capture his 37th career pole.
As the rain clouds started rolling in, the green flag waved over the 36-truck field to start the 250-lap race. Skinner led the first 16 laps before rain stopped the event. Despite his dominant performance in the opening laps, Skinner notified the crew that the handling of his truck was tight.
Once the rain stopped and the track was dried, Skinner resumed his lead until the caution flag waved on lap 53. Skinner pitted for four tires, fuel and a minor adjustment. He restarted 25th after the back half of the field opted not to pit. Skinner would have to work his way back up to the front.
Picking off positions one by one, Skinner worked his way into the 12th position before rain stopped the race again on lap 100.
The rain delay lasted several hours, and the teams later returned to a track with no grip. Several cautions ensued, while Skinner attempted to pass trucks on a track that is notorious for difficult passing. Despite this, Skinner collected his sixth top-five finish of the season when he crossed the start/finish line in fourth.
Skinner extended his point lead heading into next week's event at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. The race will be televised live on SPEED Friday, June 1.
