There is no doubt that Ron Hornaday had the quickest truck at the Mansfield (Ohio) Motorsports Speedway, but because of a bit of bad luck Hornaday had to drive his way from the back of the field twice. Hornaday started the race from the ninth position and brought home a hard fought top-10 finish. He also jumped one spot in the point standings, moving into the second position, just 121 points behind leader Mike Skinner.
During the first practice session, Hornaday was second fastest posting a time of 16.870 seconds (106.698 mph), and was third fastest during the final practice with a time of 16.585 seconds (108.532). Hornaday went on to qualify the No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet in the ninth position with a time of 16.622 seconds (108.290 mph).
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Ohio 250 was full of caution flags and rain delays that caused the race to go late into the night. The first rain of the day began on lap 16. Once the field restarted, the trucks ran until lap 35, when they were allowed to head to pit road to make adjustments. Rick Ren told his driver, "I think you should stay out." Hornaday responded with, "Well, I get paid to drive and you get paid to tell me what to do."
When the race went green on lap 36, Hornaday was in ninth place, and by lap 38 he had made his way to the fourth position. On lap 42, Hornaday successfully passed Todd Bodine and moved into third-place.
The Camping World team made their first scheduled pit stop of the day under caution on lap 53 for four tires and fuel. Hornaday restarted the race on lap 58 in 23rd. By lap 61 he had moved up to the 19th position, and posted a speed of (16.729) seconds, making Hornaday the fastest truck on the track.
On lap 102 another storm hit the track, delaying the race once again. When the field went green on lap 116, Hornaday was in the 10th position, and quickly heading to the front of the pack.
After making contact with Todd Bodine on lap 143, the Camping World Chevrolet headed to pit road under caution for four tires and fuel. Hornaday restarted from the 30th position. An undaunted Hornaday began passing trucks one by one, lap by lap. At a track that is extremely difficult to pass on, Hornaday had raced his way to the 11th position by lap 192.
Bad luck would strike again on lap 195, when Hornaday and Bodine made contact again sending both trucks spinning and bringing out the caution flag.
Hornaday stayed out, and with 50 laps to go had a lot of ground to make up from the 23rd position. He radioed his crew saying, "I'm sorry guys, we have a great truck." Rick Ren reminded his driver that he had the fasted truck on the track and that he had passed 17 trucks in 50 laps.
Throughout the race, Hornaday consistently posted the quickest speed on the track at 16.728 seconds. Hornaday fought his way through the field ending a very long day with a sixth-place finish.
Ron Hornaday Quotes:
"I'm really proud of all the guys that work on the Camping World Chevrolet. The truck was awesome. We fought our way from the back of the field into the top 10 twice. With all of the cautions and rain delays, we just ran out of time.
"To have a truck like this that can go from the back to the front that quickly is pretty cool. It was a lot of fun."
