A fast truck in Kansas had the International MaxxForce Diesel team looking forward to another quick truck at Lowe's Motor Speedway, hopefully with some better luck. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck series test the week before with a new tire compound was a disappointment for the MaxxForce Diesel team. In the shadows of the back straight away, crew chief Dennis Connor and the Circle Bar team took their ailing F-150 back to the Circle Bar shop to try and find the speed they left in Kansas. After a week of work, the team returned to LMS for the Quaker Steak and Lube 200 expecting to be better.
Practice speeds were disheartening, because with all the work that had been done, the MaxxForce Diesel F-150 had not been able to pick up any speed. Both Circle Bar teams were back in the 20's on the speed chart and both had more questions than answers. Small gains were made in the second practice but not enough. The team took a huge swing and went for broke with their qualifying set up. Qualifying would be another disappointment, putting them 30th in the field.
The set up was a go for broke deal and it didn't work, the race was an impound race and the team would have to deal with it as best they could. From the drop of the green flag Starr moved forward but soon found himself with an ill handling truck when the tires went away. Hanging on to an evil truck, Starr made his way to pit road on the first caution of the evening.
Connor and crew did the best they could but the style setup left little room for adjustment. The over the wall gang's work was quick enough to get Starr out of the pits as the first truck 1 lap down and in position to gain the free pass back to the lead lap with a caution. On lap 47 Starr got the free pass and after taking on fuel and more changes Starr took up the tail end of the lead lap trucks. Back under green Starr's MaxxForce Diesel F-150 wasn't responding and the F-150 fell further back.
On lap 88 the caution flag would wave and Starr came back down pit road for 4 fresh Goodyears, a load of Sunoco fuel and more changes. This time the F-150 started to show some life but the team was now trapped a lap down and too far away to gain the free pass. On lap 100 Star would bring his truck down pit road again for more changes, trying to find something the F-150 would respond to. A trac bar change made the truck better but the nose was still slamming the pavement on corner entry unsettling the truck through the corner. At every chance, Connor and the team kept working to make the International machine better but it was not to be. As the checkered flag flew the team crossed the stripe in the 23rd position.
Dennis Connor: "It was a rough night for our group. I'm very unhappy with the performance of our truck but our guys never quit. We're going to test our Mansfield truck on Monday and hopefully we can build on our short track finish from Martinsville for Mansfield."
David Starr: "Tonight was pretty frustrating. Dennis and the guys kept at it but or International MaxxForce Diesel F-150 never really responded. We have a great group of guys and we're all working hard to make our trucks better and I know we'll get there."
