For his first race with new sponsor, Camping World, Ron Hornaday raced his way to the front of the field and never looked back. He started the race from the seventh position, and dominated the Quaker Steak and Lube 200 leading 98 of 136 laps before going to victory lane.
During the first practice session, Hornaday's truck was sixth fastest posting a time of 30.544 seconds (176.794 mph) at Lowe's (N.C.) Motor Speedway. Hornaday qualified his No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet in the seventh position with a time of 30.281 seconds (178.330 mph).
Hornaday started in seventh. It only took nine laps before he had made his way to the second position, when the first caution flag of the evening flew. Hornaday stayed out, and once the field restarted he began making his way forward again. On lap 18 he was on the bumper of race leader, Travis Kvapil, and by the next lap he had taken over the top spot. Hornaday quickly distanced himself from the field, pulling 4.30 seconds ahead of second place, and by lap 35 was already lapping trucks.
When the caution flag flew on lap 37, crew chief Rick Ren told his driver to "come on in and we'll give you four tires, fuel and just a tick of air pressure adjustments." He restarted in fourth place and by lap 46 was up to the second position. Hornaday radioed to his team, "we must have a good truck to be able to go to the outside like this."
On lap 88 the caution flag flew once again and Hornaday headed to pit road for another scheduled pit stop for four tires and fuel. Hornaday restarted in the second position behind AJ Allmendinger on lap 91. Now able to go the distance without anymore stops, he began working on maneuvering around Allmendinger. On lap 98, Hornaday successfully made the pass on the inside for first place.
When the caution came out on lap 101, Rick Ren told his driver, "you are pretty good on everything - it's all yours."
Ron Hornaday held off AJ Allmendinger with 36 laps to go in the Quaker Steak and Lube 200 on Friday night. Hornaday, known as the "master of restarts," held off Allmendinger on two more restarts, including a green-white-checkered finish. This is his first win at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Hornaday has now extended his career record of Truck Series wins to 30.
Rick Ren also set a new record with his first win at Charlotte, for the crew chief in the Truck Series with the most wins with a different driver (five). This was also Chevrolet's first win of the 2007 season in the Truck Series.
Ron Hornaday Quotes:
"We showed up for testing and basically threw everything out the window. Rick and I made a lot of good notes. I couldn't tell you what it was specifically, but Rick made the right call. Once we got three wide on the track, and it stuck when I was wide open, I knew this was going to be a good truck.
"I guess it goes back to the luck. Camping World's colors are blue and yellow, and I won a lot of races in those colors. We have all been looking forward to Camping World coming onboard, and having those colors back on the truck."
Rick Ren Quotes:
"I've always wanted to win here. For me it's like winning Daytona.
"When you can start out a long stretch of racing like we did, it gets everybody pumped up for what they have to do when you are running for the championship."
Next up for the No. 33 Chevrolet Silverado: Defending race winner Ron Hornaday will drive the No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Ohio 250 at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway.
