Friday started out as such a promising day for Jack Sprague and the Wyler Racing team as they entered Lowe's Motor Speedway for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series running of the Quaker Steak and Lube 200 presented by Circle K. After being on top of the speed charts during testing at Lowe's Motor Speedway last week, Sprague and the Wyler Racing team were eager to hit the track for the 134-lap race, but an early race accident forced their exit after only 36 laps.
Lowe's Motor Speedway has been a tough track for Sprague who had three previous starts at the 1.5-mile oval. Even though he had qualified in the top-13 in each visit to the speedway, Sprague's best finish at "The Beast of the Southeast" came in 2004 when he finished 24th.
Sprague was eager to hit the track to top his 24th place finish, but he and the Wyler Racing team were even more excited when Team Owner, Jeff Wyler, personally delivered the team's "win rings" for their February win at Daytona International Speedway in the Chevy Silverado HD 250.
With everyone proudly wearing their Daytona win rings on Friday afternoon, Jack Sprague and the No. 60 Con-way Freight Toyota took to the track for qualifying, laying down a lap of 30.152 seconds at a speed of 179.093 miles per hour, which was good for third on the starting grid.
When the race got underway, Sprague slid to fourth from his third place starting spot. When the event's first caution flag waved on lap nine for a wreck in turn two, Sprague told Crew Chief Tony Furr that his Con-way Freight Toyota Tundra was a "little free in". When the green flag waived on lap 12, Sprague worked his way back into the top-three.
"It's a little too tight," said Sprague on lap 28, just before he began a door-to-door battle with the No. 6 truck. Sprague stole the second spot on lap 36, just before he cut a right front tire which sent him slamming hard into the turn four wall.
With severe damage to the right front of his No. 60 Con-way Freight Toyota, Sprague took the mandatory trip to the infield care center and his Toyota Tundra was hauled to the garage for repair. With the damage too significant to return to racing, the Wyler Racing team called it a night with their first "Did Not Finish" (DNF) of the year.
Sprague was credited with a 34th place finish and fell two spots in the 2007 Championship Point Standings. Sprague is currently 7th in points, only 257 points behind leader, Mike Skinner.
Sprague and the Wyler Racing team will take the No. 60 Con-way Freight Toyota Tundra to Mansfield Motorsports Speedway on Saturday, May 26th, 2007 for the running of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Ohio 250.
