Raybestos Rookie of the Year leader Aaron Fike drove the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra to a 14th place finish in the Quaker Steak and Lube 200 presented by Circle K on Friday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway, grabbing the Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the third consecutive race of the year.
Fike, who has been the top rookie in four of the six NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races this season, overcame radio trouble over the last forty laps to grab his fourth top-15 finish of the year.
"I think we were better than that," explained Fike after the race. "I mean, we were a top-10 truck and I lost my radio about halfway through the race. That didn't help. Jamie Jones (Crew Chief) and everybody at Red Horse Racing gave me a good truck to drive. We were just a little bit off there at the end."
Fike wasn't off by much in qualifying, after he laid down an impressive lap of 30.672 seconds at a speed of 176.056 miles per hour around the 1.5-mile oval of Lowe's Motor Speedway. Fike's lap was good for 15th on the starting grid, but he wouldn't remain there long after the green flag dropped for the start of the Quaker Steak and Lube 200.
"It's a little loose everywhere," said Fike on lap 9. "Especially through turns three and four." Even though his Toyota was a little loose, Fike quickly found a rhythm, working his way into 12th when the event's second caution fell for a wreck in turn four. "I'll tell you what," said Jones to his driver, "We got in a rhythm and our lap times were as good as anyone on the race track."
Jones called his driver to pit road under the caution flag for four tires, fuel, and a track bar adjustment, returning Fike to the track in 11th position.
"I think it's a little too tight for me to drive behind anyone," said Fike during the event's first long green flag run. "You're doing good buddy," said Jones. "Just hustle it. I'll loosen you up on our next stop."
Fike's next and final pit stop came at lap 90 after the caution was displayed for a wreck on the front stretch. "It's not bad in clean air," said Fike as he brought the No. 1 Toyota to pit road for four tires, fuel, and a track bar adjustment. "It's a little tight behind anyone." Jones' made a track bar adjustment to free Fike up, returning him to the track in 11th position.
When the race returned to green flag racing on lap 93, Fike began to have radio trouble. The team could hear him, but he was having a few problems clearly hearing his spotter. Even though he was having radio problems, Fike managed to avoid the event's final three cautions to bring the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra home in 14th after a green/white/checkered flag finish.
"We're making a lot of progress," said Fike after the race. "I think every race we're getting better and better, up to this point. I thought the race went really well today. I think not having a radio there at the end really hurt, especially when we were running three-wide. It's real hard to run in traffic and stuff. I wish we would have been in the top-10, but we'll go on to Mansfield next weekend and hopefully we should contend for a top-five or maybe a win."
Fike picked up two spots in the 2007 Championship Point Standings to 9th, only 287 behind the Point's Leader, Mike Skinner. Fike is only 17 points away from Travis Kvapil, who holds down 8th place.
Fike and the Red Horse Racing team will take the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra to Mansfield Motorsports Speedway on Saturday, May 26th, 2007 for the running of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Ohio 250.
