Musgrave Ready for Rematch in Martinsville
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

In last fall's Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway, Ted Musgrave led the most laps and proved his Team ASE Tundra was the truck to beat. Race winner Jack Sprague was Musgrave's toughest competition, and he went on to win following Musgrave's restart penalty late in the race. Both Musgrave and crew chief Rick Gay are anxious to return to the sight of the fantastic racing to see what they can do with Sprague in this Saturday's Kroger 250.

"Jack and I had a good race going there last fall, but we didn't get to fight to the finish with him," said Musgrave. "I know the Team ASE crew, Rick Gay and myself - we are looking forward to putting the Team ASE Tundra back on track at Martinsville to see what we've got this time around.

Musgrave qualified third in his last appearance at Martinsville, then led 105 of the 200 laps in October's race. Still, he says there's no time to worry about the 'could've beens.'

"At Martinsville, there's definitely no time to worry about how you did the last time you were there. You think about it when you strap in - you kind of rehearse how things played out and remember any lessons you need to remember, but that's it. The green flag falls, and it's all about each lap, each turn, each straightaway," said Musgrave. "I want the Team ASE Tundra to have a strong race again. If I end up in leading at a restart again, I'm sure I'll have a few folks helping me remember how to do a restart - Rick Gay, Mike Hillman, me…I just want us to get the chance to have that to worry about."

Crew chief, Rick Gay Jr., is confident that though he's putting a different Tundra on the race track than what Musgrave raced there last fall, that the only unknown in his team's equation will be the new tires that Goodyear will bring to the race track.

"We've tested the 2007 Team ASE Tundra and it's very good," said Gay. "The only unknown going into Martinsville is the new tire from Goodyear. With the way this truck can handle, we should be able to adjust for the new tire compound."

In 30 NASCAR starts at Martinsville, 20 in the Cup Series, ten in the Truck Series, Musgrave has incredibly never suffered a DNF. The veteran racer has won three Bud Pole awards at the track, and collected six career top-five and 11 top-ten finishes in NASCAR's premier series.

Musgrave takes the Team ASE Tundra to Martinsville sitting fifth in the series point standings.

Fall Martinsville: Ted Musgrave qualified 3rd and looked to be a sure winner - with Jack Sprague the only truck able to challenge him. Musgrave was penalized on lap 137 for a bad restart, he served his penalty by coming to the pits and was relegated to a 15th place finish after leading 105 of the 200 laps in the Kroger 200

Crew chief, Rick Gay Jr., is taking TRD 086, and he says the only unknown in the equation is the new tire Goodyear will bring for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series: "We've tested the truck and it's very good. After last fall's race, yes, everyone on the Team ASE Tundra team feels like we've got a point to make this weekend. The only unknown going into Martinsville is the new tire from Goodyear. With the way this truck can handle, we should be able to adjust for the tire change and repeat our performance from October."

Musgrave loves the nonstop strategy of Martinsville: "Martinsville isn't just an all-out slug-fest of a short-track. There's a lot of handling, from the truck being set up right, to the driver knowing how to run the right lines around Martinsville. We almost had a perfect race there in the fall, I have no idea if we would've made it on fuel, but I know we really enjoyed the view with the Team ASE Tundra running at the front of the field so much. I'm hoping that's something the folks at ASE and the fans get to see a lot more of this weekend."

Musgrave says there's no time to worry about the 'could've beens': "At Martinsville, there's definitely no time to worry about how you did the last time you were there. You think about it when you strap in - you kind of rehearse how things played out and remember any lessons you need to remember, but that's it. The green flag falls, and it's all about each lap, each turn, each straightaway. I want the Team ASE Tundra to have a strong race again. If I end up in leading at a restart again, I'm sure I'll have a few folks helping me remember how to do a restart - Rick Gay, Mike Hillman, me…I just want us to get the chance to have that to worry about."

Stats: In 30 NASCAR starts at Martinsville, 20 in the Cup Series, 10 in the Truck Series, Musgrave has incredibly never suffered a DNF. The veteran racer has won 3 Bud Pole awards at the track, and collected 6 career top-5 and 11 top-ten finishes in NASCAR's premier series.
