| Cut Right Rear Stops Starr at California
02-26-2007 | TruckSeries.com Report
With a new team and a new teammate David Starr and his MaxxForce International Diesel Ford F-150 had a plan to attack the San Bernardino 200 at California Speedway. Starr and his Circle Bar teammate Rick Crawford would make the trek to the 2 mile with 2 completely different set ups under their Fords. The plan was for both teams to practice their respective setups and the 2 teams would compare notes and come up with a setup for both trucks. During the first practice both teams were not happy with their set ups and they made wholesale changes with both still working in opposite directions. The Circle Bar/Power Stroke Diesel made the most improvement in the final practice and the MaxxForce team changed to mirror the 14's. While the team worked on the changes Mother Nature stepped in and cut the final practice short. With the changes complete Starr and his team would have to qualify with a setup they had never turned a lap with. With the team in the field on owners points the idea was for Starr to turn 2 conservative laps and shake down his F-150. With the first lap in the books Starr noticed the temperature rising on the water gauge and he shut the motor off before he could complete the second lap. Finding out what he had and what they needed to make it better would have to wait until the drop of the green flag. Starting 22nd Starr would spend the first few laps settling into the new setup on his MaxxForce F-150 and working with crew chief Dennis Connor on making the changes they needed to get better. The San Bernardino 200 took on a green flag look and it would take 30 laps before the caution flag would fly and give Connor and the over the wall gang an opportunity to give Starr the changes he needed. Starr wheeled his F-150 to pit road 22nd and the team slammed on 4 fresh Goodyears, made an air pressure adjustment and packed in a full load of Sunoco fuel in 16.947 seconds moving from 22nd to 16th on road. Back under green, Starr could hold his own in the top 15. As the laps clicked off, MaxxForce machine was losing grip and the team backed up to the 21st position. With the caution flag in the air on lap 50 Starr would come to pit road for 4 Goodyears, an air pressure adjustment and fuel cell was jammed with every ounce of Sunoco they could get in it. Connor was already playing for the finish at the halfway point, the team planned to stay out until the checkered flag flew. Knowing that this set of tires would be his last for the night Starr was conservatively picking up spaces on the track. On lap 70 a promising night would turn into a nightmare. Coming off of turn 4, a cut right rear tire would put Starr into the spin cycle. Starr was able to avoid a major catastrophe but the nose of his Ford F-150 would hit the inside wall hard enough to break the splitter on the nose of his truck. Part of the new NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series rules package is a new nose with a "splitter" on the bottom of the nose. The entire aerodynamics of the truck starts with the splitter and if the splitter is not right the truck will not handle. Starr's splitter was not only not right it was now split itself, with part pointing up, part pointing down and part straight. At a track like California, aerodynamics are critical and the start of Starr's aero package was now junk. If Starr had a handful before, he was now in the deep end of the pool with no lifeguard. On lap 90 Starr's machine would spin again and the team was now scrambling for tires using the set they had already taken off earlier in the evening. Now 3 laps down the MaxxForce team settled to finish the event in the 28th position. Crew chief Dennis Connor: "The over the wall guys put in a solid performance with really quick stops picking us up spots every time we came in. Other than that's there is not much positive I can say about California. We are experiencing growing pains on every level. The off weeks before Atlanta will give us time to regroup from the mad rush of the last 5 weeks." David Starr: "As much as I would like our MaxxForce team to be contending for the win every week, I realize it is going to take us some time to come together as a unit. The over the wall guys were "always performing" this weekend just like a MaxxForce Diesel Engine. I just wish I could have done as well on the track. I know that Dennis will get us going in the right direction and we'll be able to make some "bold moves" in Atlanta." The MaxxForce International Diesel Power Team will be in action when the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series holds round 3 of the 2007 season in the American Commercial Lines 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Friday, March 16th.
