Fike Stronger Than Finish Shows at Daytona

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Rookie of the Year contender Aaron Fike, proved that he has what it takes to race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series after making his debut in the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra on Friday night at Daytona International Speedway. The 24-year-old Galesburg, Ill.-native earned respect from drivers on and off the track after qualifying 12th, racing his way into second spot, and pulling off a top-twenty finish in Chevy Silverado HD 250.

Fike was nearly the top-qualifying rookie after laying down a lap of 51.065 seconds at a speed of 176.246 miles per hour, but was bumped from that honor by the late draw of Tyler Walker. "I figured we would run faster now," said Fike after qualifying. "We ran like a 50.90 in practice and I figured we'd run at least a seventy, but everything is cold, the air and the oil and everything. I'm a little disappointed with the lap, but it's alright, we should be in there - in the top 15, around there to get a good pit box, that's all that matters."

Fike's lap held up for 12th but at the drop of the green flag, he wasted no time moving into the top-10. "It feels pretty good," said Fike of the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra just before a caution was displayed on lap 11 for a wreck in turn two. Fike was going to stay out, but due to an error with the pit road flag, NASCAR allowed every team to pit and return to the track in their original running order. Crew Chief Jamie Jones called Fike to the pits for fuel only, but as Fike was exiting pit road he made contact with the No. 16 causing minor damage to the front of the RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra.

Fike returned to the attention of the crew two times under caution to fix the damage, take on four Goodyear Wrangler tires, and fuel, returning to the track in 33rd position. When the race resumed on lap 16, Fike quickly jumped to the high side and worked his way into the top-25.

On lap 24, NASCAR displayed the caution for a multi-truck wreck coming out off turn four. "We drove right through that bad boy," said Fike after he maneuvered through the six-truck melee. "I knew that 63 truck was going to wreck, so I dove to the inside," he explained. "If we hadn't got by those two trucks on the backstretch, we might have been in that."

On the restart, Fike battled for position in a three-wide pack. By lap 31, the rookie was holding his own amongst the veterans while running the outside line. Fike led a group of trucks on the outside and was up to third by lap 33. Falling in line, single file, Fike stayed patient, stayed in line, and earned the respect of the veterans around him. The fifth truck of a seven truck breakaway, Fike's truck began to become loose. "The truck is getting looser and looser," he explained on lap 49.

When the next caution flag flew on lap 51 for a wreck in turn two, Jones brought his driver to pit road for four tires, fuel, and an air pressure adjustment, returning to the track in the sixth position. Just 11 laps later, the No. 59 crashed on the front stretch and the field checked up to avoid the wreck. "I don't know if I slid the tires or what," said Fike before bringing the RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota down pit road for four tires, fuel, and another air pressure adjustment, returning to the track 21st.

Fike proved to have a tough truck, after working his way into 12th by lap 79. "It's really getting hard to hang onto," said Fike. "It's getting tight, but it's snapping loose." Fike returned to pit road for the final time of the night on lap 82 for four tires and fuel. "This is the most fun I've had racing in a long time," he said after returning to the track 13th.

"We've got a good truck, buddy," said Fike's Spotter, Jeff Dickerson on lap 88. "Hopefully we'll get this thing up there and finish in the top-five."

The final caution flag flew on lap 89, setting up a short shootout to the checkered flag. With only six laps remaining when the race returned to green, Fike restarted in 8th position and quickly jumped to the high side where he had made so much progress all night. But with three laps to go, Fike was shuffled to 16th where he would finish out the night.

Fike and the Red Horse Racing team will take the No. 1 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra to the 2-mile oval of California Speedway for Friday night's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series running of the San Bernardino County 200.
