Gale, No. 2 Chevrolet Review: Daytona

02-19-2007 | TruckSeries.com Report

Cale Gale started his 2007 NASCAR Truck Series season for Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) with a solid 14th place finish in the Silverado HD 250 at Daytona International Speedway in Florida.

This was not only Gale's first Truck Series race, but it was also his first time racing at the 2.5-mile Daytona (Fla.) superspeedway. Gale showed his strengths throughout the race in the No. 2 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado, finishing in the top-20, ahead of many of his veteran competitors.

Cale Gale started 14th near teammate Ron Hornaday, and by lap one had made his way to the 9th position. During the caution on lap two, Gale told Crew chief Charlie Wilson -- "the car is running good."

He restarted in the eighth position and was in 10th when the second caution waved. Gale headed to pit road for gas only on lap 12, restarting in the ninth position. On Lap 17, Gale fell out of the draft and found himself back in 17th. By lap 18, Gale was racing to catch teammate Hornaday for drafting help.

On lap 21, Gale got drafting help from Johnny Benson and Mike Skinner when the next caution waved. Gale came in and took four tires and fuel. He restarted the race in the 16th position right behind Hornaday. Gale, with help from Hornaday, found the low line and began making up ground on the leaders.

On lap 49, while sitting in the 13th position, caution waved and Gale noted that "the car is tight in the middle and off, but other than that it is good." After pitting for four tires and fuel, he restarted in the 13th position.

When the caution came out on lap 61, Gale was forced into the grass to avoid the wreck, telling his crew chief, "check the splitters because I drove it through the grass." After bringing the No. 2 to pit road for four tires and fuel, crew chief Charlie Wilson told Gale, "car looks fine and we are good to go."

Gale fought his way back drafting in a group of 20 trucks, at times three wide. On lap 77, Gale fell out of the draft, but worked his way back into the top-20, sitting in the 14th position when the caution waved again on lap 80. "Car isn't bad Charlie, a little tight, but we should be good," said Gale.

With 15 laps to go, Gale sat in the middle of a 20 car draft. On lap 85, Gale fell out of the draft to the 20th position, the tale end of the lead pack.

Caution came out on lap 88 after a large wreck on the frontstretch, which caused Gale to spin out into the grass and up the start finish line. Gale did an outstanding job keeping the truck out of the wall.

After the restart, with only six laps to go Gale worked his way through race traffic to cross the finish line in the 14th position. "Way to go Cale good job today, it was a great day," said crew chief Charlie Wilson.

Cale Gale's thoughts on Daytona International Speedway and the Chevy Silverado 250:
"Oh man, I had a blast. This Camping World Chevrolet Silverado was fast and I just have to thank Kevin (Harvick) and DeLana (Harvick) for the opportunity to drive their equipment here tonight. You know, Charlie Wilson and the boys put a good truck under me tonight and this was the first time I had ever been to a superspeedway. I learned a lot and I got tangled up in one incident earlier in the night there on the front straightaway and that could have been pretty bad. But overall I learned a lot about the trucks and I think it was a good weekend overall for us."

Next Up For The No. 2 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado Team:
Next up will be the San Bernardino County 200 at the California Speedway on February 23, 2007. KHI's co-owner and CEO, Kevin Harvick will be behind the wheel of the No. 2 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado for his first race of the season in the NASCAR Truck Series.
