| Sean Murphy Claims Top 10 in His First Ever Snowflake Derby
12-05-2006 | TruckSeries.com Report
Sean Murphy Qualified 26th out of 69 entries into the Allen Turner Snow Flake Derby on Saturday night at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola (FL). Murphy piloted the No. 52 ASI LIMITED; Akzo Nobel, Spectrum Metal Finishing Chevy to an impressive 10th place finish out of the 39 car field. The Snowflake Derby witnessed some of the toughest competition in the country. It was Murphy's first-ever time at the famed track. But his top ten finish was not without some pre-race adversity. Murphy took to the track for his qualifying run, but before crossing the start line the racecar's clutch went out unexpectedly. The SS Racing team led by Crew Chief Deon Deneau worked hard to get a new clutch installed before the end of qualifying. The team's impressive efforts allowed Murphy to make a two-lap qualifying run at the last minute and lock into the starting field with his fast time of 17.775. In what is recognized as one of the toughest late model races in the country, just making the show was an accomplishment. "I've never changed a clutch that fast before," said Deneau, long time crew chief for SS Racing. "My guys worked really hard and Sean stayed very calm and collected. He went out in a rush and laid down a very solid lap." With qualifying behind them and a guaranteed spot in the race the team turned their focus to the race. The 100-lap event was full of hungry drivers all aggressively attempting to move forward in the field. Murphy drove a heads up race dodging several wrecks and keeping his car clean. His talent shined as he drove his was carefully but aggressively through the field. "I just raced the track," said Murphy. "Some of the guys out there were getting angry and making some interesting gestures. I just stayed in my grove, protected my line and avoided the mess." Murphy made two pit stops under caution for tires and adjustments. His pit stop support came from the SS Racing crew, which was made up of many of the members of the old ASA touring series crew for short track legend, Butch Miller. After the final stop in the last quarter of the race his car appeared to be getting stronger. Murphy maneuvered his way through traffic passing 16 cars to reach his 10th place finish. Murphy proved he will be a contender at the highest levels of professional late model racing. He is currently in negotiations with SS Racing to compete in a full season of ASA Late Models and various major Late Model races around the nation.
