After spending most of the year on the offensive and in the top 5 in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points standings, the month of November had the Circle Bar Truck Corral team playing defense at Homestead Miami Speedway. The previous two races ended early with blown right front tires and the Circle Bar Ford F-150 in the fence and the team dropping from 5th to 9th and trying to stay in the top 10.
With a top 10 spot in the final points standings in the balance crew chief Kevin "Cowboy" Starland called on chassis CB-20 for the season finale in Miami.
CB-20 is new to the Circle Bar team in 2006 and was built as a clone to the team's down force workhorse chassis the "Flying Monkey". The Flying Monkey was to be the truck for Miami but it was one of the November casualties, having gone down in Texas. CB-20 had been tested and was ready for action and showed promise off the trailer. With blown right front tires ending the last 2 races, the team reworked the front-end geometry and setup of their Ford F-150 to the conservative side of the ledger. The non-aggressive setup cost the team on the watch and they spent the practice sessions looking for a happy medium between the two. With solid tire temps and wear numbers the team gained ground on the watch with every turn on the track. With an eye on the long runs and the race being an impound race at night the team would qualify 16th.
With the drop of the green flag driver, Rick Crawford, took the first few laps to feel out his Ford F-150 under the lights. With a solid Ford F-150 under him Crawford used the end of the first caution period to start making some Bold Moves to the front. The Circle Bar team moved from 18th to 9th in less than 10 laps and CB-20 was starting to take on the look and feel of the Flying Monkey. As the grip in the tires went away Crawford moved his Ford to the high line and was working traffic trying to real back in the leaders. With caution on the racetrack Cowboy called the Circle Bar machine to pit road, 4 Goodyears, Sunoco fuel, raise the track bar and a bottle of water for the driver. The over the wall gang was on their way to a great stop when a freak accident happened. The right side tires went on with no problem, the left side would be different. The jack lifted the Ford F-150; the left front tire changer hit the 5 lug nuts and handed the tire to the jack man. The jack man who normally handles the tire was turned the other way and the tire hit the jack dropping the truck to the ground in the middle of the stop. Luckily the jack was still under the truck and it was jacked back up and the stop completed. The stop would drop the team all the way back to 22nd. Back under green the team was on the move picking up lost ground. The caution flag would fly again on lap 67. With only a few laps on 4 fresh Goodyears, Cowboy would make his first strategy call of the night, fuel only. The move would get the team to the front of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series field and back in contention. Under green Crawford was looking to take 3rd from eventual race winner Mark Martin but would come up short on older tires. By lap 80 older tires really started to give way to fresh tires and the Circle Bar team would slide back to 10th. Not worried Cowboy was playing his strategy for fresh tires at the end of the race and on lap 95 the pieces of the puzzle started to fall in place. With caution on the track Cowboy brought the Circle Bar machine to pit road for the final stop of the night, 4 Goodyears, fuel and a track bar adjustment. The over the wall guys performed a great stop but the team would give up 5 spots on pit road. Other teams were playing out different pit strategies, some taking fuel only. Under green, the team picked up 5 spots in 2 laps but by lap 5 the handle on the Circle Bar truck went away and the Ford F-150 starts to slide backwards. Earlier in the day the team had experienced the same type of situation with an incompatible set of tires and fixed it with a new set. They would not have that luxury this time and would have to work with what they had. With an eye on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series standings the team nursed home a 16th place finish and retained their 9th position in the points standings.
Crew chief Kevin "Cowboy" Starland: "The guys did a solid job all night, you have to shrug off freak accidents like we had on pit road and keep moving forward. The last set of tires killed us, if it had been a cup race we could have just put on a new set but in the truck race it was the last set we had. I'm glad we were able to finish and retain our top 10 spot in the points."
Driver Rick Crawford: "We really had a good truck in the middle of the race and I was able to make some bold moves with the Circle Bar Ford F-150. I thought we had shot at picking up a spot or two in the standings but our Ford F-150 really didn't like the last set of tires we put on. We were able to bring it home in 1 piece and we can start focusing on 2007. Cowboy and the guys have worked hard all year and it's nice to be back in the top 10 in the points. The last couple of banquets haven't been a lot of fun being outside the top 10 but we're back and we plan on being better next year."
