Lester, No. 22 Toyota Review: Phoenix
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

Bill Lester drove his Waste Management Toyota Tundra to a 20th-place finish in the Casino Arizona 200 Friday night at Phoenix International Raceway.

Lester was the eighth of 35 drivers to make his qualifying attempt around the one-mile oval Thursday afternoon. He posted a time of 24.408 seconds (126.725 mph), which landed him the 32nd starting spot for the event.

The green flag waved for the start of the event, and Lester began picking off positions. He stood 26th when the yellow flag waved on just the second lap of the 150-lap race. A second caution period several laps later enabled Crew chief Doug Wolcott to call Lester into the pits for service after Lester communicated to the team that the handling of the Waste Management Toyota was tight in the center of the corner. The team made track bar and wedge adjustments to the truck before sending Lester back on the track in 31st for the lap 14 restart.

There was no shortage of yellow flags during Friday evening's event, and the No. 22 team used them to its advantage as Lester struggled with a Tundra whose handling had become loose in and off the corners and tight in the middle. Additional chassis adjustments were made on laps 35 and 44. Lester held the 23rd spot at the halfway point of the event. By lap 81, he was unable to hold off the hard-charging leader, Mark Martin, who put him one lap down.

Lester broke into the top 20 after quick pit work by his crew on lap 101, and when the green flag waved for the restart two laps later, Lester lined up as the first truck one lap down. Luckily, the caution flag again waved just one lap later, and Lester and the team were given the Lucky Dog award, which returned them to the lead lap.

With a scheduled 36 laps remaining in the event, Lester held the 16th spot and was happy with the handling of his Waste Management Toyota Tundra. Lester's truck and the No. 20 truck of Marcos Ambrose collided during a battle for position, and Lester was sent spinning up the track. The team fell to 23rd as Lester was forced to pit for new tires and repairs to the nose of the machine. He was able to gain three positions by the time the checkered flag waved.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series heads to Homestead-Miami Speedway Nov. 17 for the season-ending Ford 200. Live coverage of race, scheduled for an 8:15 p.m. ET start, will broadcast on Speed (television), MRN (radio) and XM Satellite Radio.
