Toyota Qualifying Notes: Martinsville
Jack Sprague, No. 60 Con-way Freight Tundra, Wyler Racing: How was your qualifying run? "It was rather cold and rather slippery. The guys gave me a great truck. In the first practice, I was really good, except I was loose off and couldn't leave the corners. Tony (Furr, crew chief) and the guys did a great job and in the second practice the truck was awesome. In qualifying, I about knocked down the wall going into turn one on the warm-up lap. The tires just locked-up, the track was so cold. But, other than that, I was able to get the pole. We've been running real well, I think we've just been snake bit. But, maybe here we can turn our luck around and try and stay out front all day and win this thing."
How important is starting up front? "It's more important here than anywhere else. It used to be you could pass here, when the tires were softer and the trucks would fall off, and the handling would go away. Now, these tires are bulletproof, they will run as fast at the start of the race as at the end of the race. It's very difficult to pass. Hopefully, we can keep our Tundra up front all day and not have any mishaps."
Mike Skinner, No. 5 Toyota Tundra, Bill Davis Racing: "We struggle here in qualifying. We had an awesome truck last year in the race here, then we had some rear brake issues. We just have to finish one of these things here at Martinsville. Hopefully, we can get us a top-five or a top-10 finish. It's a Toyota, so you know it's going to be pretty good."
Ted Musgrave, No. 9 Team ASE/Germain Toyota Tundra, Germain Racing: How was your qualifying run? "The race track changed a bit. The track has more grip. My truck was a little tight, which might be a good thing come race time because everybody seems to be loose off the corner. My biggest problem was coming off turn four, the sun was in my eyes and I couldn't judge where the walls were, I was a little hesitant."
What are the keys to the race? "Keeping tires on it and make sure you have enough fuel. We'll probably stop and get it done early, if there's a caution anywhere between lap 25 and 50."
