Chevy Race Notes: Talladega
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

As a multi-truck wreck happened in turn three of the last lap in the inaugural NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, Chevy Silverado veteran drivers Ron Hornaday, No 33 AES HR Solutions Silverado and Dennis Setzer, No. 85 Shell Rotella T Silverado wove their way through the melee to score the ninth and 10th finishing positions respectively.

All drivers walked away from the accident, that included Silverado drivers Mike Wallace, No. 15 GEICO Silverado, and Derrike Cope, No. 40 Key Motorsports Silverado, who were running second and sixth at the time. Robert Richardson, No. 1 winyourmortgage.com Silverado, was also involved.

Per NCTS rules, because the leader had taken the white flag, the race was scored official at the first scoring loop nearest the accident, giving Mark Martin (Ford) his fifth win of the season. Mike Skinner (Toyota), Ted Musgrave (Toyota), Todd Bodine (Toyota) and A.J. Allmendinger (Toyota) rounded out the top five. Manufacturers' points after round 20 of the 25 race NCTS season stand as follows: Toyota - 141 points (10 wins); Ford - 129 points (7 wins); Chevrolet - 98 points (3 wins) and Dodge - 70 points (0 wins). The next event is the Kroger 200 on October 21, 2006 at Martinsville Speedway.

Dennis Setzer, No. 85 Shell Rotella T Silverado, Qualified 26th, Finished 10th:
"Well you know we didn't qualify all that well but we were able to run up front with them all day and we're pretty impressed with that. Randy Goss our crew chief says he'll make this No. 85 Shell Rotella Silverado better and I promise you he will."

What did you think about the first race here at Talladega? "I was really impressed with how tame all the guys were out here today for the first 93 laps today. Our truck got loose there on the last lap, but its supposed to you know, because everyone went wide and I think I was back there in a five-wide deal. There were trucks all over going high, low and all over. That's what you're supposed to do there in the end of one of these races. I just hope everyone is okay, because I know a lot of those guys hit pretty hard on that last lap."

Ron Hornaday Jr., No. 33 AES HR Solutions Silverado, Qualified 18th, Finished 9th:
"It was actually pretty calm, it was calmer than I thought it would be. I will tell you what; you have to do a lot of driving here, a lot of lifting, a lot of gas. I just want to thank Kevin and DeLana Harvick, AES, Chevrolet to give me the opportunity to have this much fun racing at Talladega in our Silverado. This was just a blast, I can't thank them enough. You just wish there was more laps and you hate to see that happen on the last lap."

Matt Crafton, No. 88 Menards/Energizer Silverado, Qualified 29th, Finished 18th:
"We just didn't have the truck we needed to race today so I didn't have the fun in my first Talladega truck race I would have loved to have had. I could get towed but I could not push somebody or run by myself. I got shuffled out and back in to the top-10 then shuffled back again. We did learn a lot and we will be ready for them when we come back the next time."

Joe Nemechek, No. 46 U.S. Army Silverado, Qualified 23rd, Finished 28th:
"The U.S. Army truck was good. I ran out of a little luck there with the spoiler cracking, and it started vibrating pretty bad and NASCAR is looking at it, so in their eyes, it was the right thing to do. But, there were a couple of others out there that were flapping pretty bad. It is just incredible the amount of disturbance that goes on with the air, either on the windshields, the spoiler, the hood, I mean it is just
incredible. The trucks are just boxier. I had a blast driving the truck, and it is just a lot of fun to drive those things. Everyone used their heads pretty good, and nothing really crazy was going on. I am looking forward to running a couple of more races this year, and I am looking forward to going to some of these tracks that you have to control the gas to make the truck go fast. It was fun, and I have to
thank the whole crew, this deal came together pretty quick, and I had a ton of fun."
