Saturday night, under the lights, on the newly redesigned Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Todd Bodine rolled to the green flag in eighth place and took the checkered flag for the Smith's Las Vegas 350 in twelfth. Bodine, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points leader, was very fast in the opening laps, making it to fourth place by lap 23. He then spent the remaining laps of the race working to get the #30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota Tundra back to the front of the field, making up ground he lost from a pit road speeding penalty.
"I think something went wrong with our truck tonight. The Lumber Liquidators Toyota Tundra was running great throughout the test and practice sessions this weekend, and we didn't change anything after qualifying, but the truck was so different," said Bodine.
Track position proved to be a tough subject for Bodine, who early in the race radio'd to his crew that his truck was loose when he was racing alone and it was tight when he was near other race trucks. Bodine spent laps 27 through the checkered flag on lap 146 battling his way back through traffic.
"The pit road speeding penalty didn't help us tonight, that's for sure," said Bodine. "We ended up getting the truck really loose. At the end, we got it to a point where I could make up some spots. We're leaving Las Vegas with the points lead, but I know we were all hoping to get to victory lane tonight."
Bodine had tested at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as part of a Goodyear tire test in preparation for this weekend. One driver from each of the motor companies, Toyota, Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet, were sent to the test. His experience with the track was used as the baseline for the setup of both of the Germain Racing race trucks this weekend.
Mike Skinner, driving a Toyota Tundra, took the win over Bodine's teammate Ted Musgrave. Bodine's twelfth place effort added some drama to the points race as his lead over second place Johnny Benson was cut to 91 points.
