After the mechanical malfunctions Chad Chaffin experienced in Loudon, he is ready to take his Toyota Tundra to the front of the field this weekend in the Smith's Las Vegas 350. Last week being Chaffin's first race of the 2006 season in a Toyota, he wanted to have a better showing. "I was disappointed last week that we didn't have a great run. I was really hoping the first race with Toyota this year would be a successful one, but things happen. We will go to Las Vegas with the same desire and hope things go our way," Chad commented. The desire to have a strong finish this week is influenced by a few different motivators.
The first motivation that Chaffin has is obviously the fact that he wants to be successful in his new Toyota Tundra. With the rekindled relationship that Chad has with Toyota, he wants to be successful for Toyota and his Harris Trucking Motorsports team. Secondly, throughout the past 3 years Chad has finished in the top-20 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and he would like to step that up to a top-10 finish.
Las Vegas Motor Speedway has gone through a reconfiguration since the last time the Craftsman Truck Series visited. The changes should create some pretty awesome racing. The major change that will affect the racing is the increase of banking in the corners. The corners are now banked 20 degrees instead of 12 degrees and the walls are raised approximately 15 feet to accommodate these changes. The backstretch that was formerly banked three degrees is now banked 9 degrees, matching the frontstretch. Going into this weekend's racing action, teams are not sure what to expect, but Chaffin is confident that he can be successful at the faster and more competitive racetrack. "I have raced in the Nextel Cup, Busch, and Truck series at Las Vegas and have put down plenty of laps, but with the reconstructions that have happened I really don't know what to expect. I think the track will be faster and a lot more exciting for drivers, as well as, the fans," explained Chaffin.
