Erik Darnell, in the No. 99 Woolrich Ford, was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race at New Hampshire. Darnell finished ninth and took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the 10th time in 18 races this season. Darnell is the first Raybestos Rookie to score a top-10 finish at New Hampshire since David Reutimann scored a fifth-place finish in 2004.
Eric Darnell: "That's not too bad. I've just got to than John Quinn and all the guys for working on this thing because we weren't that good in practice yesterday. I didn't get to make a qualifying run so I didn't know what it was going to do today and we tightened it up too much and ended up qualifying 23rd there. They adjusted on it before the race and our Woolrich Ford F-150 was pretty decent out there. I think as the sun came down, I think the track started tightening up and we just didn't quite adjust for it and that kind of bit us in the end there. But to still come out of here with a top-10 was pretty good."
You were racing Mark Martin for position at the end of the race. "That was pretty cool. It's always comforting in the back of your mind to know that you've got a teammate behind you because you know they're going to race you clean but at the same time it's Mark Martin. If he would have got to me and got underneath me I probably would have let him go just because I knew he run me down so he was a little bit quicker than me. But he raced me real clean there and I was able to hold him off and that was pretty neat."
How much can you learn racing Mark Martin? "A lot. You get out there and earlier in the race when he was good before he got some damage on his truck he was way faster than we were and running away from us a little bit so I was having a hard time keeping up with him. But when I was behind him you follow his lines and see where they're braking getting in and at a tough little track like this, you can learn quite a bit."
This team seems to be getting better and better as the season rolls along. Are you adapting to this series? "The trucks are new to me this year. I had to say, though, at the beginning of the year we were on it, too, to come out with two top-10s in the first three races. That was pretty good. We just lost a little bit of that in the summer there and but we're getting back on our program here and running better every week. We're looking to win the Raybestos Rookie of the Year deal and hopefully end up in the top-10 in points."
You had a good day at a tough track. "I'm definitely happy with that. To see some of the accidents that happened out here today, if you were able to stay out of the messes and if you had a decent truck, you were going to get a good finish out of it and that's exactly what we did. The guys did a good job on pit road, gained us a couple spots every time. I couldn't ask for anything more."
"Our Woolrich Ford F-150 was pretty decent during the race. We couldn't run with Kyle and them guys up front but from where we qualified, it was a pretty good run for us. I didn't really know what to expect during the race just because we didn't qualify as well as we would have liked. We weren't that good in practice yesterday but my crew chief, John Quinn, and all the guys did a real good job making some adjustments on the truck for the race and we were able to get a top-10 out of it."
In the heat of the battle, does manufacturer come into play at all? Do you think about each other's driving history? "Well, today at the end of the race, I wouldn't say manufacturer but as a teammate to have Mark Martin right behind me there and he had been in a couple incidents earlier. His truck wasn't great and mine wasn't at the end, either, and he got right up behind me. He got underneath me a couple times but I was able to hold him off. But manufacturers, not really, I don't think you think about that. You're just thinking about racing the truck that's out there next to you."
Chad Mccumbee, No. 08 GPS Store/Garmin Chevrolet:
"You obviously want more and I think we performed a little better than our finish was today. Once again, we really struggled in practice. We changed a lot of stuff and it seemed to work for the race. We were a little off today. There's no doubt about it: we were a little off. We'll have to go back and think about what we're doing. Maybe work on this truck a little bit more or maybe have it sit out the rest of this year, we don't know. I can't thank the guys enough. They worked their tails off. I'm looking forward to going back to the speedways because I think we've got a really good program there."
Ryan Moore, No. 40 Key Motorsports Chevrolet:
"I came here with a goal to finish in the top-15 and kind of wanted to be on the better side of 10th or so. I met my goal and like I said I'd rather have been a little bit better. I really think we had a top-10 truck and for some reason the last set of tires that we put on we were just real, real bad. We were way, way too tight and I just couldn't get back in the throttle like I could earlier in the race when we were running like 11th or so. The Toyotas are just so good and they've got such great motors, if you can't beat them back to the throttle, they are just going to walk all over you all the way down the straightaway. I'm not sure why the last set of tires wasn't any good. There's no explanation to it. That's just the way it fell out. If we had another 100 laps or so and another set of tires to throw on it we probably could have got back into the top-10 or so and we'd have been fine. It's a good day. I got to watch my Dad win and that was pretty special. He puts a lot of heart into this race. This is like coming to Daytona for us in the Busch North deal and everyone works real hard for that race. It's pretty awesome for him to win and got to watch that on top of the toolbox and then jumped into our truck. We ran like two laps and had a caution and I wasn't sure what the truck was doing we were way back in traffic and I just had a feeling it was going to be too tight. We came in and made some big adjustments and the thing took off. We passed a lot of trucks and got up there and were kind of holding our own around 11th-place and just that last set of tires killed us but it is what it is. We'll keep trying to build a little bit of momentum and go on."
You have a lot of laps here. Did that help you today? "Oh yeah. If it was a racetrack that I'd never been to, at the end there when it was as tight as it was, at least this racetrack I know where I can be and what points I can hit to try and help the truck turn and what not. I could use all that to my advantage and be able to hold my own. It was just way too tight and couldn't get back in the gas quick enough."
You've been struggling lately. What was the difference today? "This is the truck that we ran at Nashville and we got out of Nashville in one piece and we spent some time working on it. This is just a real small team, not much experience here and that's what we've got to do: get it out of the racetrack in one piece. Get home and work on it and fine tune and try different things. Make it through practice and make good decisions through practice and eventually we're going to be, probably at about Homestead, we'll have some good stuff. We're going to try to get Curtis Key in the top-30 in points and no matter who is driving his stuff next year they'll be able to race when they get to Daytona."
Robert Richardson, No. 1 Winyourmortgage.com Chevrolet:
"I was racing on the outside there and was passing a lot of people on the start. I went off into 1 and started going off into the corner and saw the wreck happening up high. I was already on the outside of a bunch of guys so I didn't want to pinch them off, just wanted to try to squeeze through the wreck the best I could. I just got up into the marbles, got loose and backed into the wall. It's not the way we wanted it to end. The guys worked hard at the shop trying to get these trucks done. It's bad luck on our part and it just seems to keep biting us every weekend. We'll go to Las Vegas next week and see if we can pick up some good luck there."
Boston Reid, No. 25 Woodard Racing Dodge:
"Bobby Jr. just took us out. It's ridiculous. In the NASCAR races, you're going forward or you're going to get wrecked. Either you're passing cars or you're going to get wrecked. It's proved every week by individuals that keep getting wrecked. And today we didn't have the truck. I understand that we were in the way but there's no sense in flat taking us out like he did. I'll go talk to him and see what he says. I'll remember it. I never even cut him off. I gave him plenty of room and I don't know what he was doing. That's all right. There's plenty of racing."
