Veteran Mark Martin added another Bud Pole Award to his collection, turning the fastest lap in qualifying for the O'Reilly Auto Parts 200 at the Bristol Motor Speedway Wednesday afternoon. Martin, driving the No. 6 Scott's Ford, toured the high-banked half mile in 15.320 seconds at a speed of 125.248 miles per hour. The Bud Pole was the second of the season for Martin.
It's the fourth time this season the No. 6 has lined up first on the grid. In addition to Martin's two pole efforts, teammate David Ragan started first via rule book produceds at Gateway in April and drove the truck to the pole in Indianapolis earlier this month.
Rookie Aric Almirola earned the second starting position behind Martin with a 15.366/124.873 lap in his No. 75 Spears Manufacturing Chevrolet. Almirola, who was involved in a wall-banging incident earlier in a practice session, equaled his career-best qualifying effort with the run.
Brendan Gaughan starts third after running a 15.370/124.841 lap in the No. 77 Sherwin Williams Dodge. Mike Bliss is fourth at 15.446/124.226 in the No. 16 Xpress Motorsports Chevrolet. Rick Crawford rounds out the top-five in the No. 14 Circle Bar Truck Corral Ford (15.449/124.202).
Defending race-winner Mike Skinner lines up sixth after running a 15.458/124.130 lap. The rest of the top-10 is Kyle Busch in seventh (15.495/123.833), Johnny Benson in eighth (15.502/123.778), Marcos Ambrose in ninth (15.505/123.754) and Bobby Hamilton Jr. in 10th (14.538/123.491).
Two trucks were involved in on-track incidents during qualifying. Terry Cook backed his truck into the outside retaining wall on the second of two laps after earning the 15th position on the initial circuit. David Starr, who qualified 23rd, flat-sided his truck. Both will start at the rear of the field following repairs.
One truck did not qualify. Chuck Maitlen failed to post a time quick enough to earn in a spot in what would be his first career event.
