In 1985 Rick Crawford made his first trip to Nashville to race in the All American 400, his first trip to win a Nashville guitar. From the first race at the Fairgrounds in 1985, Crawford developed a love-hate relationship with Nashville, he loved racing there but there were times when it felt like the racetracks hated him. A bridesmaid on several occasions the Nashville guitar has eluded Crawford for the last 20 years. Fresh from a win at Indianapolis the team strolled into Nashville as the hottest team in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Just 5 points out of 2nd crew chief Kevin "Cowboy" Starland tapped chassis CB-19 for the concrete surface of Nashville Superspeedway. New to the team this year, CB-19 already had a handful of tops 5's and was so fast in Kansas it looked like a flying monkey from the Wizard of Oz.
Off the hauler CB-19 didn't take well to the concrete surface of the Nashville Superspeedway. The team struggled during practice barely able to stay in the top 20 on the speed chart. The team went to work and posted a 12th place starting position. Almost from the drop of the green flag Crawford realized there was something wrong with his Ford F-150. A tire issue cropped up on the Circle Bar machine and the team was forced to make a green flag stop. While the rest of the field circled the high banks of the Nashville Superspeedway at 170 MPH Crawford brought his ailing Circle Bar machine down pit road to fix the problem. The over the wall gang fixed it but a green flag stop at Nashville cost you 2 laps and it looked like the Circle Bar team's streak of top 5s was coming to an end.
On lap 26 the caution flag would fly and give the Circle Bar team one of its two laps back and leave them only 1 lap down. On lap 33 the caution flag would fly again and Crawford would rejoin the lead lap of trucks. Back on the lead lap Crawford was a man on a mission, passing trucks in wholesale fashion, from 30th to the top 10 by lap 80. With each lap the Circle Bar Ford kept getting better and with each lap more trucks would go by the wayside. Incredibly, the team had gone from 2 laps down to the top 10 then to the top 5. With 10 laps to go it looked like the team would salvage another top 5 from a horrible beginning. On lap 144 with 6 laps to go that would all come to and end. The right front tire blew and the Circle Bar Ford slammed the turn 3 wall and the team was done for the day relegated to a 28th place finish.
Crew chief Kevin "Cowboy" Starland: "Today was just a heart breaker. We got behind early and Rick got up on the wheel and got us back in contention. Then we blew a tire and it ended our day. We had a solid truck but you have to be perfect to win a championship."
Driver Rick Crawford: "We missed a great opportunity today to really gain some ground on the points leader and it just didn't happen. When you start the race 2 laps down you think your day is gone. We kept digging and fought our way back into the top 5 and blew a tire with a handful of laps to go. We've had 3 bad races this year and they were all tire problems, it's pretty frustrating. We've worked hard to build a championship team and we've got too much good going on to let this get us down."
