Bill Lester drove his SunTrust Toyota Tundra to a 21st-place finish Saturday night after transmission issues arose during the final 40 laps of the Toyota Tundra 200 at Nashville Superspeedway.
The weekend began on a high note for Lester and the SunTrust Toyota team. Lester posted some of the top speeds in both of Friday's practice sessions. He stood second in the final practice session, which was shortened by rain. Lester backed up his fast practice times with a speed of 161.050 mph during his two-lap qualifying run around the 1.33 -mile tri-oval. The lap was fast enough to earn him the fifth spot on the starting grid for Saturday evening's event.
The green flag waved for the start of the Toyota Tundra 200, and Lester began to drop through the field almost immediately. He communicated to crew chief Doug Wolcott that the SunTrust Toyota handled extremely tight throughout the corner. Wolcott prepared to make track bar, air pressure and wedge adjustments to the truck during the first pit stop of the day, which occurred under caution on lap 24. After his Bill Davis Racing crew bolted on four fresh tires, filled the fuel cell and made the necessary changes, Lester returned to the track for the restart on lap 27.
Lester held the 20th spot 50 laps into the 150-lap race. He reported to the crew that the truck's handling had begun to get loose off the corners. He went one lap down to leader Marcos Ambrose on lap 67. On lap 79, Lester received another opportunity to receive adjustments on the truck. Air pressure and track bar adjustments were made, and Lester rejoined the field on the track. Lester continued to fight a loose-handling Tundra, but was fortunate enough to earn the "Lucky Dog" award, thus returning him to the lead lap on lap 113.
Lester's hopes of being able to fight his way toward the front were short lived, as problems with the transmission occurred one lap later. Lester was only able to drive the SunTrust Tundra in fourth gear for the remainder of the race. Despite his troubles, Lester finished a respectable 21st. The team picked up two places in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series owners' point standings and now unofficially stands in 27th place.
