Kevin Grubb drove his No. 15 Spondivits Chevrolet for Billy Ballew Motorsports to a 14th place finish this past Saturday night at Memphis Motorsports Park. Making his second NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start in 2006, Grubb battled a tight condition for a majority of the race while running in the top-10, but fell back at the conclusion of the O'Reilly 200 to finish in 14th position.
"I had a good time out there," said Grubb. "I, at least, got a top-20 finish. I was hoping to do better, but the Billy Ballew Motorsports team did a good job and we got a good finish. We struggled throughout the race being tight in the center. The longer we ran, the worse we were. We were able to adjust on our pit stops but it just wasn't quite enough. I knew when we qualified, the No. 15 Spondivits Chevy was tight, but since we were under impound, we were forced to leave it as it was and wait until our first pit stop to adjust."
The No. 15 Spondivits Chevrolet ran into a bit of trouble during practice, as they cut down a right front tire and hit the turns one and two wall. "We cut a tire in practice and had to fix the damage, which cut into our practice time a bit," explains Grubb. The damage or lack of practice didn't hinder the Billy Ballew Motorsports team too badly, as Grubb posted the eighth quickest qualifying time.
Starting eighth, Grubb quickly took over seventh place and would remain in position until the second caution period on lap 62. Grubb was complaining of being tight through the center, so during the pit stop, the crew made appropriate adjustments while changing four tires and adding fuel. Grubb restarted in 11th place, but quickly picked up two spots within two laps when the third caution waved. The No. 15 Spondivits Chevy remained in ninth place until lap 100 when they slowly started drifting back during the long green flag run.
The race went green for almost 90 laps before the fifth caution came out on lap 177 for debris. Grubb had dropped to 16th position and one lap down, but was able to make some much-needed adjustments when the No. 15 hit pit road. The No. 15 lined up alongside the leader for the restart on lap 181 and was able to jump ahead and remain out front until the next caution a few laps later. The Spondivits Chevy was back on the lead lap in 16th position. An incident on lap 197 caused the race to conclude in green, white, checkered format, but allowed Grubb to pick up two positions. Grubb held on to bring the No. 15 Spondivits Chevy home in 14th place and moved Billy Ballew Motorsports up one position in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Owners' Points Standings.
"Kevin did a great job for us out there tonight," said Billy Ballew, team owner. "I wish we had had a little better showing for Spondivits, but we held on and did the best we could do. I especially have to thank Andy Camp and Spondivits for helping us out and sponsoring the No. 15 at Memphis."
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series concluded their strenuous nine-week run and takes a much-needed two weeks off before returning to action at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis on Friday, August 4.
