Skinner, No. 5 Toyota Review: Kentucky
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

The No. 5 team headed to Kentucky Speedway with something to prove. The team has had four straight weeks of strong runs and wanted to cap it off with a victory. The crew brought the same truck which has captured the pole in three of the last four races and finished second at the Texas Motor Speedway in June. The team knew its driver, Mike Skinner, was hungry for a win, and was hoping this was going to be the week it went to victory lane.

In Friday's practice sessions Skinner was fast. Skinner complained the truck was tight in the middle of the corners but was really happy with how quick he could get to the gas, which helped his exit. The team made a couple of small changes to the truck to try to free it up in the middle of the corners. Skinner told his crew the changes they made had helped, and the team went to work trying to dial its Toyota Tundra in for the race. By the end of the practice sessions, Skinner was close to the top of the speed chart and the team was looking forward to the race.

When the green flag was displayed to the field on Saturday evening Skinner was in the inside of the sixth row but was on a tear towards the front of the field. By lap 10, Skinner had broken into the top 10 and was running times as fast as the leader. He told his crew chief Jeff Hensley he was a little tight in, but felt like on the long run he would be good.

When the caution flag flew on lap 27 Skinner and his team decided it was time to come to pit road. Skinner brought his No. 5 Toyota Tundra down the pit lane on lap 29 to the attention of his crew. The crew changed four tires and filled the truck with fuel. They also made chassis and air pressure adjustments to their Tundra in hopes it would help the truck in the corners.

When the race was restarted on lap 32, Skinner found himself in the 17th spot behind a number of trucks which elected not to pit during the caution period. On lap 43, Skinner told his crew the truck was way too free and he needed to be tightened up on the next stop. The free condition did not seem to hinder Skinner from moving towards the front. By lap 70, Skinner was in the runner-up position tracking down the leader. Seven laps later the No. 5 Toyota Tundra took the lead and started to pull away from the field.

On lap 88, Skinner radioed in saying his truck had changed and was tight in the gas. The 5 team started to come up with a plan for its last stop of the night. The team made a very rare green flag pit stop on lap 97. The crew quickly changed four tires and filled the truck with fuel. They also made slight trackbar and air pressure adjustments to dial the truck in for the final run of the race.

When the caution flag was displayed to the field due to a spin on the front stretch on lap 121 Skinner was one of eight trucks on the lead lap. When his fellow Bill Davis Racing teammate Johnny Benson pitted, Skinner overtook the lead and it looked like the 5 truck was going to make its first trip to victory lane in 2006.

Two laps after the restart on lap 126, Ron Hornaday made it three wide in turns one and two causing Skinner to spin coming out of turn two and putting him into the wall, which ended the team's chances for the win. The team was unable to repair the truck and finished a disappointing 31st.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series heads to Memphis Motorsports Park Saturday, July 15. The race can be seen live on the Speed Channel at 9:15 EST.
