| Lester, No. 22 Toyota Review: Kentucky
07-10-2006 | TruckSeries.com Report
The No. 22 team headed back to Kentucky Speedway, where in 2005 the team captured the pole position. The guys felt like they had a shot at another strong performance during the running of Saturday's 250-lap event and with a special paint scheme on the side of their No. 22 Rally's Toyota Tundra the crew wanted to have a strong showing. During Friday afternoon's practice sessions, Lester told his crew the truck was loose in the corners. He commented that the rear of the truck wanted to snap loose causing the truck to hit the wall. The 22 crew went to work changing four springs and tweaking the shocks. The team also changed sway bars in the truck hoping to settle it down in both corners. Lester headed back onto the track and immediately told his crew the truck felt better, but he needed more of the same change. He told his crew the truck was coming around but just needed to be a little tighter in the middle of the corners to be fast. Finally, by the end of the second practice, Lester told his crew the truck was the best it had been all day and thought they would have a sporty Tundra during the race. The 22 Rally's Tundra team was the third to last team to make a qualifying run, which they felt would play into its favor. The sun was starting to set which caused the track temperature to drop and in turn gave the trucks more grip. Lester, having not made a qualifying run in practice, did not know how his truck was going to handle during the qualifying laps. Lester ran a lap of 30.879 seconds which was good enough for the eighth spot. After the laps, Lester told his crew chief Doug Wolcott the truck felt really good and he was looking forward to the race. When the green flag was dropped under almost perfect summer conditions, Lester was determined to keep his truck in the top-10. On lap two, Lester radioed to his crew saying the truck was a little tight in the center, but he felt like his Tundra was going to come in after a couple of laps. By lap 20, Lester was solidly in the top-10, running in the seventh position. He told his team the truck was starting to move towards the loose side but the truck was really rotating through the corners. When the caution flag waved on lap 27 the 22 team called Lester to pit road for service. Lester brought his Rally's Tundra down the pit lane on lap 29 for service. The team changed four tires and filled the truck with fuel. When the race was restarted on lap 32, Lester was back in the 16th spot. He immediately called into his crew saying there was something wrong with the truck. He explained the truck was loosing power and the voltmeter was not registering. Doug Wolcott told his driver to hold on as long as he could and turn off all his blowers. 10 laps later Lester brought his Tundra to pit road under green flag conditions. The team located a problem with the battery and went to work changing it out. In the process Lester went four laps down to the leader. Lester battled for the remainder of the event but never could manage to get back on the lead lap in order to contend for the win. The team had a great truck but once again was struck by the bad luck bug. The 22 Rally's Tundra finished in the 28th position, three laps down to the race winner Ron Hornaday. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series heads to Memphis Motorsports Park on Saturday, July 15. The race can be seen live on Speed Channel at 9:15 EST.
