The Circle Bar Truck Corral Team has been slicing its way through the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series standings over the last 5 weeks leaving the rest of the competitors wondering who cut the cheese. The Magic Mile in Milwaukee has been good to the Circle Bar Team and with their success over the last month, expectations were high for the Toyota Tundra Milwaukee 200.
The Circle Bar F-150 was solid off the trailer and had the team in the top 5 on the practice speed charts. With an eye towards a solid race setup and not qualifying the team posted a 12th place starting position. >From the drop of the green flag, Rick Crawford had his Ford F-150 moving to the front. By lap 30, the Circle Bar Ford was up to 7th and looking for more when the caution flag flew on lap 38. While the field made its way to pit road for their first stop, crew chief, Kevin "Cowboy" Starland would make his first strategy call of the night. Thinking it was too soon to use 4 tires and looking towards the finish, Cowboy called for no tires, fuel and a wedge adjustment. The no tire stop would give the team the lead off of pit road. Unfortunately, the Circle Bar team was the only team that didn't take tires and it wouldn't take long for the trucks with fresh rubber to overhaul their F-150. With each lap the Circle Bar Ford would fall deeper in the field until the next caution on lap 78. Cowboy called for 4 fresh Goodyears, Sunoco fuel and adjustments. Armed with fresh rubber, the Circle Bar Ford was back on the march. Within 30 laps the team had gone from 25th to 9th. As the laps wore on the handle would slip away and the truck backed up a few spots towards the end of the run. Another caution would bring the Ford F-150 down pit road again for 4 more Goodyears and some adjustment trying to make the truck as good at the end of the run as the beginning. On track Crawford had the whip to the Circle Bar ponies going from 13th to 7th in 30 laps. As the laps wound down the Circle Bar machine would loose a little of the handle and in the closing laps would back up a couple of spots to finish 9th, the teams 6th straight top 10 finish.
Crew chief Kevin "Cowboy" Starland; "We tried a little different pit strategy to start the race and we couldn't get the cautions to fall where we needed them. I'm a little disappointed in our finish but it tells you a lot about our race team when we're disappointed with 9th."
Driver Rick Crawford; "Cowboy made a good call on that first pit stop and we ran our own race, it just didn't work out for us tonight like it should have. We needed to be better on long runs and we weren't. We were about a 50-lap truck and it was a 200-lap race. I noticed there were a lot of different strategies playing out, and I thought we were OK with that last lengthy caution, and it never came back. The guys in the pits did a good job and it was another top-10 finish."
