NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Review: Milwaukee

Looking at top fives and top 10s, Jack Sprague, Ron Hornaday Jr. and Dennis Setzer all reached milestones at The Milwaukee Mile. Sprague's fourth-place finish was his 120th top five to extend his career record.

Hornaday posted his 75th top five, second to Sprague on the career list.

Setzer fashioned his 130th top-10 performance that stands second to Sprague's 166.

David Reutimann, meanwhile, finished among the top 10 for the ninth time in 2006 to lead all competitors during the current season. Driving in the following night's AT&T 250, Reutimann finished 10th to record his third consecutive top-10 NASCAR Busch Series finish.

***

Todd Bodine remains a comfortable, 126 points up in the championship race but his 20th-place effort - worst since last September's 22nd at New Hampshire - ended a streak of 20 consecutive lead lap finishes. Reutimann is the only driver with lead lap finishes in all 11 races this year.

***

Ted Musgrave finished 24th to break a streak of five top-five Milwaukee finishes that included two victories. He also dropped a position in the standings from third to fourth.

His Milwaukee winnings of $9,765 took Musgrave to the next level in career money. With $4,006,059, Musgrave becomes only the third driver to win $4 million or more. The others are Jack Sprague and Dennis Setzer.

Australian Marcos Ambrose got a late start on the season joining the tour at Martinsville Speedway for the year's fourth event. The two-time V8 SuperCar champion by his admission is making steady progress toward the goal of becoming competitive with his new, NASCAR counterparts.

Ambrose qualified ninth for his third start among the top 10. His finish of 18th was a career best.

"I'm feeling a little more comfortable. We ran much better than where we finished, which is a shame," said Ambrose. "We're starting to run close to the front so the intensity is picking up."

Roush Racing had a forgettable night at a track on which it claims two victories. David Ragan suffered two tire failures resulting in green flag pit stops leaving the No. 6 Scotts Ford in 30th position, three laps off the pace. Raybestos Rookie of the Year leader Erik Darnell, racing in his own backyard, was only a lap and three positions better.

Milwaukee Mile CART winner Michel Jourdain Jr. couldn't duplicate his 2003 success in Bobby Rahal's champ car. The Mexico City driver joined Mike Wallace on the sidelines after the pair failed to qualify for the 36-truck field.

***

Bobby Labonte's drive at Michigan, which netted Bobby Hamilton Racing its first top-five finish of the season, carried over to Milwaukee where Timothy Peters drove the No. 4 Dodge to a finish of sixth. Peters' 2006 record, which included four finishes of 30th or worse, had been topped by an 11th at Mansfield, Ohio.

***

Only two drivers - Kerry Earnhardt and Chris Wimmer - failed to take the checkered flag marking the fourth time in the past five races that there have been two or fewer DNFs.

The number of teams running at the finish stood at 31.7 (of 36) entering the season's 11th race.
