The 22 team headed to Michigan needing a strong finish. The team's finishes in the 2006 season are not indicative of its performance and the team was hoping to turn its season around at the two-mile speedway in the Irish Hills. Bill Lester knew he was going to have a full weekend of racing ahead of him as he was also going to attempt to qualify for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race.
In both practice sessions, the 22 team fought both loose and tight conditions. Lester told his crew chief Doug Wolcott the truck was loose into the corners and tight up off. The team made a number of spring and shock changes hoping to correct the conditions Lester was facing. By the end of the final practice, Lester told his team the truck was a lot better on entry but he still was battling a loose condition coming off the corners.
When the green flag was displayed to the 36-truck field Lester knew he had his work cut out for him. He had the Waste Management Tundra all the way back in the 26th position, but was confident he could get it to the front. On lap 10, Lester told his crew chief the truck was tight into the corner and loose in the middle. On lap 12, the team made a pit stop to put a rubber in the right front spring in hopes it would help the truck handle.
The changes did not seem to help the truck. Lester still complained the truck was loose in the middle of the corners and wanted a big adjustment on the next pit stop. When the caution flag was displayed to the field on lap 36 Lester brought his Tundra down pit road. The team changed four tires and filled the truck with fuel. They also made a trackbar, wedge, and air pressure adjustment to the truck in hopes it would help Lester on the track.
When the green flag was again displayed to the field, Lester was back in the 26th position. He radioed to his crew saying the changes helped, but he needed more of the same.
Lester called into his crew on lap 62 saying the truck was so free he was almost spinning out every lap. Doug Wolcott called him to pit road so the crew could look at the truck and after further investigation the team found a broken sway bar arm. The team worked on pit road to replace the arm, but went laps down in the process.
When the checkered flag was displayed to the field Lester was back in the 33rd position, five laps down to the race winner Johnny Benson.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series heads to The Milwaukee Mile this Friday night to race under the lights. The race will commence on Friday, June 23rd. The race can be seen live on the Speed Channel. Check local times for listings.
