Bill Lester and the No. 22 Toyota Tundra team were looking for a solid finish at Texas Motor Speedway Friday night. The team has had a number of solid runs this season, but its finishes are not indicative of its performance. Lester knows how to get around the one-and-a-half-mile speedway was and was confident in his team's ability to bring a fast Tundra to the track.
In Thursday's practice sessions Lester struggled to find a balance in which he could race for 167 laps. The team worked through a number of different shock and spring combinations hoping they could hit on something with which Lester would feel confident. Lester told his crew he was extremely tight in the center of the corner which hindered his exit. The team refused to give up and at the end of the practice sessions the team felt like they had a setup that Lester could drive.
Lester qualified his Tundra in the 26th position, but had to start shotgun on the field because the team made a carburetor change on Friday morning. He called into crew chief Doug Wolcott on lap three saying the truck felt pretty good and it showed on the track. Lester was running competitive lap times and was picking off positions. By lap 15, the team had moved up into the 22nd position and Lester said the truck was pretty good into the corners. He commented to his crew that the truck was a little tight off.
When the caution flag was displayed to the field on lap 21 the 22 Tundra team called its driver to pit road. Lester brought his truck down the pit lane on lap 22 for two right side tires. The team also made a wedge adjustment hoping to correct the tight condition he was feeling. As he was leaving pit road, Lester made contact with the No. 20 truck, which caused a little right front fender damage.
Lester restarted the event on lap 25 in the 19th position, but as soon as the green flag was displayed to the field Lester started to fade. The damage to the right front of his Tundra was causing the truck to push in the corners, which really was hurting his times on the racetrack. Luckily for the team the caution flag was again displayed to the field on lap 34. Lester took the opportunity to come down pit road and the 22 team went to work on the right side. The team pulled out the fender as well as bolting on two more right side tires.
Lester again started near the back, but was on the move towards the front. By lap 110, Lester had moved all the way up into the top-20 and his times were competitive to the leaders. He called into his crew again saying he was sliding all the way through the corners, but it did not hinder his times on the track.
The crew made their last pit stop of the night under the caution flag on lap 162. The team bolted on four fresh tires and filled the truck with fuel. They also made a trackbar adjustment to their Tundra for the six-lap shootout. Lester gave it all he had and when the checkered flag was displayed to the field he was in the 22nd position.
