Todd Bodine increased his points lead with an electrifying win in Friday's Sam's Town 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. Bodine had a great car going into the race, but fell a lap down and battled back to catch race leader, Mike Skinner, who raced the dominant Tundra all race long. On the final lap of the Sam's Town 400 Bodine collected his third win of the 2006 season and his third NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series career win at Texas Motor Speedway.
Bodines' No. 30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota Tundra was strong all weekend. The team had two good practice sessions on Thursday before qualifying. With a solid qualifying effort, Bodine put his No. 30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota Tundra in the sixth starting spot for Friday's Sam's Town 400.
Things looked good for Bodine early on in the race as he moved from sixth to fourth by lap-20. The first caution of the race flew on lap-23 and Bodine came in with the leaders for two tires and fuel. When the field went back to green flag action on lap-26 Bodine was in the fourth spot. It didn't take him long to make his way into the second spot as he took second from Johnny Benson on lap-27. Bodine kept his eyes firmly on race leader, Mike Skinner.
On lap-51 the third caution of the race came out. Bodine followed Skinner into the pits. The crew made a quick air pressure adjustment on his right rear tire and topped him off with fuel. The field went back to green flag action on lap-55. Todd started in third, but the fourth caution of the race flew just after the restart (lap-56). Bodine restarted again in third on lap-58. By lap-60 Bodine was back to second. As he secured the second spot, his older tires started to show as he slipped back from second to 17th by lap-86. While slipping back Bodine fell a lap down and hoped for a caution flag. He got his wish and the caution flag flew on lap-101. Todd was the recipient of the 'lucky dog' which helped him to get back on the lead lap, leaving him to restart in the 14 th spot. The caution flew yet again for the sixth time and Bodine came to the pits in 10th position for four tires, fuel, and a track bar adjustment.
Bodine was good to go for the remainder of the race. With new tires under him Bodine made his move back up to the front, from 14th to fifth in just 22-laps. By lap-160 Bodine had made his way to second and was watching race leader, Mike Skinner. Bodine needed a caution in order to catch Skinner and his needs were fulfilled on lap-162, when the seventh and final caution of the race came out. The field went back to green flag action on lap-166 and Bodine was right behind Skinner. With one lap to go - Bodine made his move on Skinner as he went to the outside and passed him for the lead, bringing his No. 30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota to victory lane.
"If that last caution didn't come out - I would not have been able to catch Mike. I got so loose on those old tires, I didn't think we would be able to come back the way we did. The crew made an adjustment on the tires and my Tundra was still a little free, but I was able to hang in there at the end. I didn't know which way Mike was going to go on the last lap. I didn't know if he was going to block me on the bottom, but I had a run and I went to the outside. Then my No. 30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota Tundra stuck to the bottom and here we are in victory lane. What can I say - these guys never give up! Even when we were a lap down, this whole team never gave up the fact that we could battle back. I can't win these races without these guys."
Bodine's win at Texas marks his 10th NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series career win in just 48 starts. The win helped him increase his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Driver point's lead to 117 points over teammate, Ted Musgrave and third place driver, David Reutimann, who is 136 points behind Bodine. Crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. Received WypAll® Wipers Crew Chief of the Race Award Presented by Fastenal.
