Mike Skinner's bad fortune was Todd Bodine's good fortune in the Sam's Town 400 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race Friday night at Texas Motor Speedway. Skinner, who started from the pole, dominated the 168-lap race and had a four second lead with just seven laps to go. But on lap 160, Jack Sprague got loose coming out of turn two and spun, bringing out the seventh and final caution of the evening. On the restart, Bodine made his move going into turn one on the final lap and held off a charge from Skinner coming out of the final corner to pick up his third Texas victory and his third win of the 2006 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season in the closest Truck Series finish in the history of Texas Motor Speedway. Bodine nipped Skinner at the line by a mere 0.116 seconds.
Bodine's night in the No. 30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota was not as smooth as it may seem, as handling problems left him a lap down at one point.
"We kept fighting," Bodine said. "That's just what this team does. We got the lucky dog and it was just pure luck. We had a good truck and we got lucky with the breaks. We had the fresher tires and that's really what we needed. I knew we had a good enough truck. I knew I could get a run off turn four for sure. I cleared him in the middle of the corner in turns one and two and got him. That's just good hard racing. I wish the two of us could have won this thing. If I had to beat someone, I am glad it was someone who is my friend like Mike." Skinner, who led three times for 112 laps in the No. 5 Toyota Tundra Toyota, was disappointed at the outcome.
Rick Crawford picked up his best finish of 2006 with a third in Texan Tom Mitchell's No. 14 Circle Bar Truck Corral Ford. David Reutimann finished fourth in the No. 17 Team Tundra Toyota, just in front of Johnny Benson in the No. 23 Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota. Johnny Benson has had three top-6 finishes in the last four races, and picked up his fourth top-five finish of the season heading into his home race at Michigan next Saturday.
Dennis Setzer picked up his best finish of 2006 in sixth in the No. 85 Rotella T Chevrolet, while Ted Musgrave recovered from a frustrating practice and qualifying day to finish seventh in the No. 9 Team ASE Toyota. David Ragan was eighth in the No. 6 Scott's Miracle-Gro Ford, Chad McCumbee was the highest finishing Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate in the No. 08 Death Toll Chevrolet in ninth, and Mike Bliss rounded out the top ten in the IWX Motor Freight Chevrolet.
There were 11 lead changes among seven drivers. The caution flag waved seven times, all for relatively minor incidents, which consumed 25 of the 168 laps. Erik Darnell, Aric Almirola, Kelly Sutton, Kerry Earnhardt, and Jack Sprague were all involved in separate incidents to draw the caution, with Sprague's spin off turn two with seven laps remaining the caution flag that set up the thrilling two-lap dash to the checkered. The race was run at an average speed of 132.129 miles per hour.
