In just his ninth NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start, 20-year-old Kyle Krisiloff collected his fourth top-20 finish in the Sam's Town 400 at Texas Motor Speedway on Friday night. Starting from the 34th position, the No. 15 ditech.com Chevy managed to wrestle their way up to the 19th spot by the end of the night.
"It was a long day for us," said Krisiloff following the 167-lap race. "I struggled with being tight the entire race. We made a lot of good changes, but just couldn't get the No. 15 ditech.com Silverado as good as we had it at Atlanta or Charlotte. Billy Ballew Motorsports has a good package to run better than we did. The trucks in our stable run well at places like this. The pit crew did a great job with no mistakes. We managed to get a top-20 finish and we'll take that and move on to Michigan next week."
Krisiloff started the 167-lap event in 34th position and was in the 31st spot when the first caution flag waved on lap 22. Krisiloff noted the truck was especially tight behind other trucks. Crew chief Buddy Barnes called for two rounds up on the track bar along with air pressure adjustments. Krisiloff pitted for the adjustments and four tires and fuel. The crew managed to pick up two spots in the pits and the No. 15 restarted in 29th position.
When the second caution waved just a few laps later, Krisiloff complained the truck was "evil tight." They pitted once again for another track bar adjustment and to make sure the right side tires were tight, as Krisiloff also thought he might have had a tire going down. They restarted the race on lap 37 with the No. 15 in the 33rd position. Three laps later, Krisiloff had gained seven positions and was riding in 26th place. When the third caution flew on lap 50, Krisiloff had only lost one spot and was 27th. They elected not to pit this time, as they were already on their second set of tires.
Krisiloff restarted in 13th position, his highest of the evening. While those behind pitted for fresher tires, Krisiloff was still struggling with the handling and tried to defend his position as best he could. By lap 70, he had dropped to 20th and when the next caution came on lap 100, Krisiloff had lost a lap and was in 23rd position. The Billy Ballew Motorsports team wasn't giving up though. They made another pit stop for more changes to help free the No. 15 ditech.com Chevy. Changes included track bar, air pressure and on the sixth caution, adjustments to the left side shocks.
Krisiloff restarted in 22nd position on lap 130, with 37 laps remaining. He radioed in that it was still too tight, but "better, better, better." Krisiloff managed to remain focused, knowing there wouldn't be any more chances to adjust and was able to pick up three more spots before the checkered flag waved.
"I am looking forward to heading to Michigan next week," Krisiloff said. "It's my favorite race track and I know this Billy Ballew Motorsports team runs well there as well."
Krisiloff moved into the top-20 of drivers points, and Billy Ballew Motorsports moved to 22nd in the owners standings following Texas.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series heads to the Irish Hills of Michigan next weekend for their fifth race in a nine-week stretch. The Con-Way Freight 200 is Saturday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. EST.
