Erik Darnell came to Texas with one of his favorite Ford F-150s and the strength of two strong finishes at sister tracks Charlotte and Atlanta. The No. 99 Woolrich team had high hopes of coming out of Texas with a top-five finish, but an early incident prevented them from reaching their goal.
Darnell showed early that the Woolrich Ford would be one to contend with, having posted the third-fastest times in both practice sessions. Darnell started the event in the 13th position, and made progress towards the top-10 in just a handful of laps. However, Darnell's good night would quickly turn sour before the No. 99 was able to show its full potential.
While racing for the seventh position on lap 21, the No. 33 truck cut down on the Woolrich Ford, taking the air off the spoiler and resulting in the No. 99 making heavy contact with the outside wall. The damage done to the No. 99 resulted in a lengthy stay in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series garage for major repairs before the crew could send Darnell back on track to pick up a few valuable points.
"We just lost it," said Darnell of his wreck. "I was loose the whole race, and I was running underneath a truck and got the air taken off the spoiler. I got loose and lost it. We got back out there and made as many laps as we could. We managed to pick up a position and we were running at the end, but it was no fun to be out there just trying to stay out of the way. That was one of my favorite trucks; it's been one of the best in our fleet. The guys will get it fixed and it'll be good as new, but tonight really stings, we had such high hopes. We'll regroup and head to Michigan next week; we'll try to make up on the ground we lost here tonight."
Darnell finished the Sam's Town 400 in the 35th position, having completed just 61 of the 168 laps.
