Kenseth, Burton And Martin Lead EMP Stewart Components Dover NASCAR Sweep
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

Dover Downs Speedway is known as the 'Monster Mile,' but the real monster during this weekend's NASCAR events at the Delaware oval proved to be EMP Stewart Components as the company literally devoured the competition.

Matt Kenseth, Jeff Burton and Mark Martin all drove EMP Stewart Components cooled racers to victory at Dover this weekend sweeping the NASCAR Nextel Cup, Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series events.

In the Cup race, Kenseth led an EMP Stewart Components sweep of the Top-4 spots while Burton and four other drivers whitewashed the Top-5 positions for the Escanaba, MI automotive high performance cooling company in Saturday's Busch race.

Martin and Carl Edwards completed the trifecta for EMP Stewart Components take the Top-2 spots in the Truck Series race Friday.

"It's hard to imagine doing any better unless we had one of our water pumps on every car in the field - kind of like Goodyear does with the tires," stated Jeff Canull, EMP Stewart Components General Manager. "We're having great success in NASCAR this season, but our water pumps are also winning in a lot of other places too. We're having an outstanding season at race tracks everywhere."

Kenseth continued to fashion his own great season rolling to his second Nextel Cup victory of 2006 and the 12th of his career at Dover Sunday. The Roush Racing driver roared past Kevin Harvick and Jamie McMurray in the final five laps to take the win Sunday.

"That's the kind of race you dream about," Kenseth stated afterward. "When you battle down the last two or three laps and finally get the lead."

Ryan Newman and his EMP Stewart Components cooled Penske Dodge Charger took the pole for the event with a lap of 154.633 miles per hour Friday and promptly led the first 12 laps of Sunday's 400-circuit event.

Kenseth, meanwhile, started 19th and methodically worked his way to the front taking the lead for the first time on Lap 121.

Kenseth and Burton - fresh off Saturday's Busch Series win - then spent the better part of the next 100 laps swapping the lead and putting all but a handful of cars a lap down as the race was slowed by just two caution flags in the first 250 circuits.

The clean and green stretch then hit some rough spots as the yellow flag waved seven times in the next 100 laps allowing several cars to work their way back onto the lead lap thanks to the 'Lucky Dog' rule.

With a number of his competitors heading to pit road for service during the late cautions, Kenseth overruled crew chief Robbie Reiser and stayed out on the raceway to maintain track position.

"Robbie told me to pit," said Kenseth afterward in Victory Lane. "I thought we were a little faster than the cars that were in front of me, and they all stayed out. I thought staying out would be my only chance to win.

"I kind of decided on my own," Kenseth continued. "As I rode by them on pit road I kind of looked over and saw Robbie's face. I knew I'd better finish pretty good."

Kenseth made good on his prediction first racing by Harvick and later McMurray in the final laps. At the finish, it was Kenseth by 0.787 second followed by McMurray, Harvick, Burton and Kyle Busch.

Jimmie Johnson rallied from a 42nd starting position and a spin during the race to finish sixth with Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. completing the Top-10 finishers.

"They were leaving me plenty of room to pass," Kenseth said. "They gave me a full lane to race in. It was just up to me to figure out how to get my car through the corner fast enough to get in front of them."

The Fords of Kenseth, McMurray, Biffle and Martin all utilized the EMP Stewart Components/Yates Pro Series Water Pump while Harvick and Burton's Chevys were cooled by the EMP Stewart Components GM Pro Series Water Pump.

Kenseth's win allowed him to close to 74 points of Johnson (2,011-1,937) in the battle for the top spot in the 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup Chase for the Championship standings. Martin, Earnhardt, Jr., Tony Stewart, Kahne, Burton, Harvick, Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch currently complete the Top-10 in the season point's race.

Next up for the NASCAR Nextel Cup crowd will be the Pocono 500 at Pocono (PA) Raceway on Sunday, June 11. The event will be telecast live on FOX beginning at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time and will also be broadcast by MRN and XM Satellite Radio.

Burton may have come up a couple of positions short of winning the Cup race Sunday, but he rolled to the front of the pack on Lap 182 and never looked back in winning the StonebridgeRacing.com 200 at Dover Saturday.

Burton's Richard Childress Racing Chevy held off the Ford of Carl Edwards by 1.170 seconds to earn his 22nd career Busch Series triumph. Kurt Busch, Clint Bowyer and Ron Hornaday, Jr. made it a sweep of the Top-5 finishers for EMP Stewart Components cooled race cars.

Kevin Harvick, 13th in Saturday's Dover event, leads Edwards by a 2,271-1,924 margin in the Busch Series championship standings after the Dover event.

The Busch Series will now head for Nashville, TN and a Saturday, June 10 event. The race will be telecast live on FX at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time and will also be broadcast by MRN and XM Satellite Radio.

Martin completed the trio of Dover NASCAR wins for EMP Stewart Components this weekend capturing the AAA Insurance 200 Friday.

Kyle Busch, the Truck Series winner two weeks ago at Charlotte, appeared to be on his way to another victory at Dover Friday only to be black-flagged late in the race because one of the pins holding the hood of his No. 51 Chevrolet in place came off.

That put Martin on the point and he stayed there beating Edwards to the finish by 3.062 seconds. It was Martin's third Craftsman Truck Series victory in six division starts this season.

Todd Bodine, Mike Bliss, pole sitter David Reutimann, Johnny Benson, Jr., Ron Hornaday, Jr., Rick Crawford, Jack Sprague and Busch completed the Top-10 finishers.

The Fords of Martin and Edwards were cooled by an EMP Stewart Components/Yates Ford Pro Series Water Pump.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will now head south to Texas Motor Speedway for a 200-mile event Friday, June 9 The event will be televised live on The SPEED Channel at 8 p.m. Eastern Time and will be broadcast by MRN and XM Satellite Radio.

EMP Stewart Components driver Mike Gardner carried the company's winning ways to the short tracks this weekend taking the Round One of the Auto Value Challenge at Norway (MI) Speedway Sunday.

Gardner's super late model stock car qualified fourth for the 50-lap main event and dodged past a couple of couple of wrecks to challenge for the lead with just a few laps remaining.

"I tried passing the leader on the inside, the outside, the inside and I finally got the break on the outside," said Gardner of the winning pass. "I was able to run side-by-side on the outside trying to pass him and with only five laps remaining. After that, I widened the gap and was able to hang on to the lead and win."

Sunday's Norway victory came on the heels of winning the Trophy Dash and a solid sixth-place finish in the 30-lap super late model feature event at Wisconsin International Raceway Thursday.

"We were very pleased with out night," Gardner stated. "We had a slimmed down version of our crew with one of them staying behind because of having to give exams at school and another out of commission for a few races. The crew did a tremendous job and pulled it all together."

Gardner will return to Fox Valley Racing Club action at WIR Thursday, June 8 and again on Saturday, June 10 for the Red portion of the Wisconsin State Championship Red, White and Blue Series. Action both evenings gets underway at 7:30 p.m. Central Time.

Tracy Gienger started out the night at Marshalltown (IA) Speedway leading the International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) stock car division season standings by eight points.

Gienger didn't do anything to jeopardize that advantage winning his second preliminary event of the season. Then, starting 12th in the main event, Gienger patiently worked his way through the competition to take his first feature event of the season.

"That was probably the best race I've ever ran," Gienger stated afterward. "To come from 12th passing 11 tough competitors and make a three-wide pass for the lead with a handful of laps left capped an awesome night of racing."

The twin victories also allowed Gienger and his EMP Stewart Components cooled 1987 Buick Regal stock car to keep the lead in the Marshalltown IMCA season championship chase.

Gienger will try to extend his IMCA point lead at the third-mile Marshalltown clay oval when he returns to action this Friday, June 9 at 7 p.m. Central Time.

The EMP Stewart Components victories weren't limited to the oval tracks this weekend as Paul and Krysto Efantis captured their respective divisions at the NOPI Drag Racing Series event at Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis, MO.

Paul Efantis drove his Toyota Solara to an easy win over Brent Rau in the finals of the Pro Outlaw RWD (Rear Wheel Drive) division Sunday while his brother, Krysto, did the same taking the B.F. Goodrich Pro Street Tire title with a win over Chris Anderson.

Efantis and his Toyota Supra made a winning pass 8.330 seconds at 173.450 miles per hour to take the win.

Both of the cars driven by the Efantis brothers are cooled by an EMP Stewart Components Electric Water Pump.

Next up for the Efantis brothers and the NOPI straight liners will be a July 8-9 event at Rockingham (NC) Dragway.

Meanwhile, the National Hot Rod Association drag racers will return to action after a week off this Thursday-Sunday, June 8-11, in the Carquest Nationals at Joliet, IL. The Sunday, June 11 final round action will be televised on ESPN2 beginning at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Grand American Daytona Prototype cars strutted their stuff this weekend at Watkins Glen International Raceway in Watkins Glen, NY with EMP Stewart Components racers Max Angelelli, Wayne Taylor and Ryan Briscoe finishing third in the Sahlen Six Hours of the Glen Saturday.

Angelelli led 26 laps and Briscoe 10 before having to settle for third place in the event won by Jörg Bergmeister and Boris Said. Alex Gurney and co-driver Jon Fogarty came home second followed by the CRD powered, EMP Stewart Components cooled SunTrust Racing Team Pontiac Riley of Angelelli, Taylor and Briscoe.

Angelelli and Taylor - the defending Daytona Prototype co-champions- had won the previous two events at Watkins Glen. They now have finished on the podium in five of their six career Rolex Series starts at the famed New York state Finger Lakes Region road course.

The SunTrust team will next compete in Rolex Daytona Prototype action at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course June 23-25. The Emco Gears Classic will be televised on The SPEED Channel Sunday, June 25 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
