Bobby Hamilton Jr., No. 18 Dodge Review: Mansfield
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competitor Bobby Hamilton Jr. overcame a temperamental racetrack, an ill handling race truck and a record number of caution flags to post an 18th place finish in the City Of Mansfield 250 at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway on Saturday afternoon. Hamilton Jr.'s Fastenal Dodge made up eight positions over the last 40 laps after he was forced to make a late pit stop, but he did not have enough laps left to make a deeper charge through the field.

  • Rain washed out Friday's scheduled qualifying session. As a result the field was set by NCTS owner's points and Hamilton Jr. started his Fastenal Dodge in the 14th position.
  • When the caution flag fell on lap 26, Hamilton Jr. radioed his crew that, "the truck is starting to come to me a little bit but it jumps out from under me when I feed it the gas."
  • On lap 44 Hamilton Jr. brought his Fastenal Dodge down pit road under caution for four fresh Goodyear tires and a full load of Sunoco fuel. His crew also made two chassis adjustments - a round down on the track bar and the removal of a spring rubber from the right rear spring. Hamilton Jr. came into the pits in the 11th position and came out in 30th place.
  • By lap 81 Hamilton Jr. had climbed back into the 16th position.
  • On lap 106 Hamilton Jr. informed his crew that his Dodge was, "loose, loose, loose. I am running it half throttle. We can't do a whole lot with these guys on short 15 lap runs."
  • By lap 120 Hamilton Jr.'s Crew Chief Danny Rollins informed him that his lap times were the best in the field "on every other lap."
  • Hamilton Jr.'s Fastenal Dodge collided with rookie Aric Almirola's truck on lap 144 when other trucks in front of him quickly slowed for an accident. The contact knocked out the front grill screen on Hamilton Jr.'s Dodge.
  • Later Almirola crashed directly in front of Hamilton Jr. on lap 161, and the Fastenal Dodge narrowly missed getting swept up in the incident. Hamilton Jr. told his crew, "That was close. I would really like a track bar adjustment or more forward bite. I know we got what we got. The truck is OK when you get heat in the tires but you have to hustle it otherwise."
  • After losing several positions, Hamilton Jr. and his crew decided to pit on lap 262. They changed four tires and added a round of bite to his chassis. He exited the pits in the 26th position.
  • Hamilton Jr. made a mad dash over the closing laps, knocking off eight spots, but he simply ran out of time on lap 250. He finished the event in the 18th position.

Ron Hornaday Jr. won the City Of Mansfield 250. Jack Sprague, David Starr, Johnny Benson and Joey Miller rounded out the top five. There were a record 18 yellow flags for a total of 85 caution laps. The next event for the NCTS competitors is slated for June 2nd at Dover International Raceway Speedway in Dover, DE.
