- Chevrolet swept both Craftsman Truck races at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2005
- Chevrolet Silverado has won six of the 11 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Manufacturer's Championships
- Silverado Drivers have won eight of the 11 possible Series' Driver Championships
- Silverado Drivers have won more races than any other brand - 120 of 267 (1995-2005)
Atlanta Motor Speedway has been the site of three thrilling finishes for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series the past two seasons, including a sweep by Chevrolet Silverado Drivers in 2005. Through three total series races at the 1.54-mile, high-banked speedway, there were two finishes that ended with top contenders crashing across the finish line and one photo finish.
In last year's spring event, Ron Hornaday, Jr. (#33 KHI Silverado) passed Bobby Labonte (#47 Silverado) at the finish line by .008 seconds in the fifth closest NCTS finish ever. In the fall event, Kyle Busch (#15 Ditech.com Silverado) beat Todd Bodine, Jack Sprague, and Bobby Labonte to the finish. Busch, Labonte, and Sprague got together while battling for the lead on the final turn. Sprague and Labonte crashed across the finish line while Busch captured his third win of the season.
Hornaday is looking forward to the site of his lone trip to victory lane in 2005 and feels that the Team has made the appropriate changes to the truck to repeat as winners of this weekend's event. "Chris Rice and the crew took the truck to the wind tunnel and blew on it and found what they needed to work on," said Hornaday. "It's the same truck that we took to California. It should be exciting, and hopefully we can have the same luck we had last spring at Atlanta. It's awesome to race under the lights, the truck has more grip and the sparks are flying."
Dennis Setzer (No. 85 Shell Rotella T Silverado), who scored his only top-five finish at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in last spring's event, is also looking forward to the night racing. "There is much more grip in the surface at night and the track actually develops three grooves," stated Setzer. "You can run low, in the middle or high on the track." Setzer will also debut the new Shell Rotella T sponsorship at Atlanta on his Morgan-Dollar Motorsports race truck, after carrying the FlexFuel E85 look at the first two races. Shell Rotella will be the primary sponsor on the No. 85 truck at seven of the 25 races.
Practice for the John Deere 200 will be from 8:45 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. and again from 11:00 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. on Friday, March 17th. Qualifying will be held on 5:10 p.m. Friday afternoon and the 200-mile race is set to take the green flag at 9:15 p.m. Eastern time also on Friday night. SPEED TV, MRN Radio and XM Satellite Radio will provide live coverage of round three of the 2006 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season.
Driver: Dennis Setzer
Team: No. 85 Morgan-Dollar Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado
Date of Birth: February 27, 1960 Hometown: Newton, NC
Regarding a new sponsor: "We are very proud to be representing Shell Rotella T on the race track this year. These guys have been a great sponsor of our sport and we really want to pay them back to choosing to support our Team by putting them in victory lane in their first race with Morgan-Dollar Motorsports. We're excited to represent their brand, their products and their distributors this weekend in Atlanta."
Regarding the race track: "Atlanta is a very tricky and fast race track. The track layout gives you lots of corners to have to deal with in your set up. Usually there is plenty of space off turn four, and everyone can get a handle off that turn, but turn two is very difficult to nail. A race truck can be loose of tight off that corner and finding the medium is critical to being fast at this speedway.
"Last year we ran well at the night race but couldn't get a good handle on the track for the day race. The night time racing gives you quite a bit more grip than the day racing does. The track ends up becoming a multi-groove race track as the race goes on with a high, medium and low line. Tires are going to be pretty important and we are going to have to stop at least twice for this 200 mile event."
Driver: Kraig Kinser
Team: No. 47 U.S. Army Silverado
Date of Birth: October 8, 1984 Hometown: Bloomington, IN
On racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the first time: "We are just going to have to try and get in as many laps as we can in practice and get a good base to go off of. It also doesn't hurt that Randy (Goss) and his Team came here twice last year and ran really well, and we've also got notes from the eighty-five (Teammate race truck/Dennis Setzer)."
"I know the (No. 47) Team did very well at both races last year, and Dennis also got a top five here last spring too," said Kinser. "That gives us a lot of information to use to make our trucks as good as they can be."
"Kraig and Morgan-Dollar want to be as good as they can be this weekend as they show off their new colors. The No. 47 will carry the U.S. Army paint scheme for the first time this year at Atlanta. "I am very proud and excited to be driving a race truck that is representing the men and women in uniform. I'd really like to go out there on Friday night and give them something to cheer about. Our goals are pretty simple though. Get some good laps in at practice, make the race and get a good run. I am going to be giving it my best shot this weekend and am very proud of how these guys working around me have kept their spirits up after a disappointment at California kept us out of the race. No one has really been blaming one another, we just have all dug deeper, worked harder, and have pulled together stronger."
Driver: Aric Almirola
Team: No. 75 Spears Manufacturing Silverado
Date of Birth: March 14, 1984 Hometown: Tampa, FL
On racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway: "I'm excited to get back in the truck and go race in Atlanta this weekend after being off for a few weeks. The experience I got at California in the truck should help me a lot on these mile and a half tracks. I had the opportunity to run a Chevrolet at Texas (Motor Speedway) last year and learned a ton when it comes to running on big tracks.
"The last two years there has been a Silverado in Victory Lane at Atlanta, and hopefully I'll have my No. 75 Spears Manufacturing Chevy up front and in contention."
Driver: Ron Hornaday
Team: No. 6 Kevin Harvick, Inc. GM Goodwrench Silverado
Date of Birth: June 20, 1958 Hometown: Palmdale, CA
On returning to AMS as the defending race winner - what are the expectations for this weekend?: "Chris Rice and the crew took the truck to the wind tunnel and blew on it and found what they needed to work on, it's the same truck that we took to California. It should be exciting, and hopefully we can have the same luck we had last spring at Atlanta. It's exciting to race under the lights, the truck has more grip and the sparks are flying."
This is noted as your favorite truck; what luck has it brought you in the past?: "Yeah, it's just the way that the guys in the fab. shop built this truck; it runs good and seems to finish well, if everything in the equation goes as it should. Each truck has a personality to it, and you have to learn how to talk to it. This particular truck seems to flex real well, and how it reacts to changes is why it makes it a favorite around the KHI shop.
How do you feel about one day shows - from a driver's perspective: "One day shows aren't bad, I just received my new motor coach from Midstate RV in Byron, GA.; and with a facility like Atlanta it makes it perfect. I can check on my truck and then come back to my coach and watch practice on SPEED Channel."
Crew Chief Chris Rice:
The same truck that Ron raced at California is your primary for this weekend in Atlanta. What did you go home and work on or adjust? "This is Ron's (Hornaday) favorite truck, I said that going to California a few weeks ago, and even after our run out there, it's still his favorite truck. He (Hornaday) likes the feeling of the chassis, no matter what speedway it's at. We brought the truck back to KHI and worked on a few things; it's ready to go racing under the lights in Atlanta."
"I find it easier to focus on one truck, or at least only a few trucks. That way, I can tweak on one truck and I learn that truck a lot faster than juggling multiple trucks."
When you and the No. 33 crew got home from California, what was the discussion during the team meeting Monday morning? "We are working on our pit stops. My guys had one of their best pit stop practices this week, so I think we are all on track to give everything we have to help Hornaday get back out of the pits first."
"Another area we are working on improving is being prepared when problems occur during the race. We have to be one Team, and anticipating each others moves so that when a problem does occur, we can get it resolved as quickly as possible. No one person is to blame for this issue, we need to work as a Team and get through issues seamless and we'll be as close to perfect as you can be."
Atlanta is a one day show for the Truck Series teams, how have you prepared yourself and your crew guys for the long day? "I like one day shows, you get in and get out, and hopefully come out on top! Seriously, it's going to be tough on these guys, but if we can unload with a fast truck it will be to our advantage. I've promised Ron (Hornaday) that we will be within the top-15 in points after the Atlanta race. It's just disappointing that with the man power and equipment and especially the Driver we are not at the top of the points chart."
Driver: Kyle Krisiloff
Team: No. 15 Billy Ballew Motorsports Silverado
Date of Birth: March 3, 1986 Hometown: Indianapolis, IN
On racing at the Atlanta Motor Speedway: "Atlanta is a really big race for us. Billy Ballew Motorsports has run well in the past and Kyle Busch won the last truck race there. It is definitely the kind of race track I enjoy to run on. It shouldn't take me too long to get used to the track because of my limited experience in ASA at the track. I really want to run well for all of Billy's close friends nearby and more importantly everyone at Krud Kutter who will be in attendance.
Driver: Matt Crafton
Team: No. 88 ThorSport Racing Silverado
Date of Birth: June 11, 1976 Hometown: Tulare, CA
On racing at the Atlanta Motor Speedway: "Atlanta is my kind of race track, I expect us to run well. It's wide-open, you can run the white line or in the middle or up against the fence. If one groove isn't working, you can always find another."
Driver: Kerry Earnhardt
Team: No. 13 ThorSport Racing Silverado
Date of Birth: December 8, 1969 Hometown: Kannapolis, NC
On racing at the Atlanta Motor Speedway: " I'm excited to race at Atlanta. I always look forward to racing there, because it's a 'Driver's track', you have to drive it hard to do well there. It's not a track where you can afford to just ride around. It's the fastest track in NASCAR, and that makes it exciting for the fans, too. Hopefully, we can finishe with something special at Atlanta, and begin a series of strong finishes for the No. 13 ThorSport Chevy."
