Fresh off his fourth-place NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series finish at California Speedway, David Reutimann travels to Troutman (N.C.) Middle School to speak at the middle school's Golden Mind Assembly and present a donation on behalf of Darrell Waltrip Motorsports on Wednesday morning.
"Being a Troutman resident myself, I'm glad to be a part of Troutman Middle School's assembly that recognizes outstanding students that have excelled and made the grades," said Reutimann. "I'll have an opportunity to speak to the students about their academic achievements and also help hand out awards, which is really neat. The students at Troutman are exceptional and I'm looking forward to being there."
Principal Jason Van Heukelum welcomed the idea of having Reutimann talk to his assembly of 125 students ranging from sixth to eighth graders.
"Dana Gillis, who is an eighth-grade teacher here and also Michael and Darrell Waltrip's niece, approached me about Troutman Middle School partnering with Darrell Waltrip Motorsports in rewarding and inspiring students toward academic excellence," said Van Heukelum. "Dana arranged for David and his team to sponsor the school. David is excited about meeting the kids and continuing the partnership through a financial donation as well as a personal appearance. With David begin a Troutman resident, we feel like this will be a great connection. We're happy to have him."
With Reutimann's Troutman roots, Gillis thought the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver would be an ideal spokesperson for the gathering.
"David is a great speaker and we are glad that he is going to be a part of our assembly and we are thankful for the contribution from Darrell Waltrip Motorsports," said Gillis. "When I contacted Amy Camp at Darrell Waltrip Motorsports about our needs, she jumped on board to make all of this possible. We are thankful that David is taking time out of his schedule to speak to students in his town. We are committed to encouraging our students to excel at Troutman Middle School and our Golden Mind Assembly is just another way of rewarding them for their academic excellence."
