Rookie Practice Notes: California
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

Eric Darnell, No. 99 Woolrich Ford:
"We're learning right now. The truck was real good on stickers but as soon as the newness wore off the thing was kind of all over the place. We're just trying to figure it out right now. It's more or less me learning the track is the big part of it, too."

How big of a factor is that extra 30 minutes of practice time? "It goes by so quick that we maybe got out there twice for the Raybestos Rookie practice and got a couple of laps out of the whole deal. It's a half-hour so it's a couple of extra laps, but it don't seem like a whole lot. We're fighting a looseness in the center right now. We've just been throwing stuff at it to try to get it figured out. The last practice we had 51 laps on these tires and we got going pretty decent so hopefully we got it figured out. When you're out there running by yourself those walls come up quick and I imagine it's only going to be worse if you're trying to get underneath a guy. It will be fun, but I've definitely got to feel it out still."

Kyle Krisiloff, No. 15 dietech.com/National Land Liquidators Chevrolet:
"This is my first time in a truck at any other place other than Daytona and it was my first time here, so all in all I think it was a good day. In Raybestos Rookie practice we ended up second and in the last practice we ended up 13th. That's pretty good for us right out of the box this year. I wish I could have ran some truck races at the end of last year or run here in anything. Being a first-timer to both those things, I'm pretty happy with the way things went. We got better all day and I knew coming into this year that the veterans and all the guys on team Chevy are going to be really tough to beat this year. I think overall it was a good day and hopefully we can get a little better before the race."

How tough is this racetrack? "I thought it was going to be no big deal. I really enjoy running Michigan and this place to me is totally different. It feels really flat out there and the whole day we were struggling to get the truck to handle through the corners and we're getting a lot better. Honestly, to me it's a totally different racetrack than anything I've ever run. It's not really like Michigan at all. It's pretty challenging but we're getting the hang of it and hopefully we'll get it better for tomorrow. Turns 1 and 2 are pretty tight as far as the radius but the whole track is just flatter. At Michigan, if you have a truck with a little bit of push, the bank will hold you. Here, if you start losing the nose, you better watch out because that wall is coming up fast."

Did the extra practice time help you? "I think the extra set of tires helped us. I don't think we need anymore time. You have less tire than you do time, so you've got to pick and choose when you want to go out. You can take your time and make adjustments because once you get 20 laps on your tires it's kind of hard to tell if the old tires or the adjustment was making you not like the way your truck is driving. That extra set of tires and that extra 30 minutes definitely was a good thing and I'm looking forward to using that at every track I go to."

Erin Crocker, No. 98 Cheerios Betty Crocker Dodge:
"We started off a little slow and we gained on it a lot. We were pretty good in that Raybestos Rookie practice. We kind of tuned ourself away that last practice a little bit and ran out of time. I felt pretty good when we had those good laps in that rookie practice. We're going to go back to that and see what we have for tomorrow."

How big of a help was the extra practice? "I think it's a big help. At Daytona we had five hours of practice but here, only having two hours, that extra half-hour was important for us today, for sure."

What's the big challenge at this track? "You've got to hit your marks perfect and the truck has got to be working well so you can do that. You're carrying a lot of speed down into those turns and it looks pretty simple, but the truck can move around on you a whole lot. It's new for me. I ran Michigan in an ARCA car but that was last year and the ARCA is a little different. It's a new experience but we'll be fine."

Chad McCumbee, No. 06 MRD Motorsports Chevrolet:
"I was really happy with it. It's been tough on me, the first time I've been in a truck other than Daytona and this is the first time that I've ever seen this place. I'm pretty excited. It's aggravating the way this point deals works out. It's aggravating that we missed the show and qualified 21st at Daytona. It's a little disheartening. I'm confident we'll get in here and race pretty good. We did a semi-mock qualifying deal there to get me used to what the truck is going to feel like with tape on it and everything and then went out with old tires on it. Right there at the end we finially figured out where we were missing it at and where we could really pick the thing up at. I'm pretty excited, doing a lot of learning and logging the laps."

How important is it to come back and have a good run here this weekend? "It's really important. I really think a lot of people with us not being in the top-30 in points and having that guaranteed spot, we would have raced well at Daytona, too. A lot of us may not be looking for Raybestos Rookie of the Year, but if we can find the dollars to finish this thing out I'm confidence that we can be the darkhorse in that deal. I'm blessed with the opportunity to be here."
